Seton Hill responded after their first loss in seven games on Wednesday night with a strong performance against Clarion on Saturday afternoon in the McKenna Center. Three Griffins scored in double figures led by
Jenna Kaufman's double double as the Griffins defeated the Golden Eagles 83-73 in PSAC West action. SHU improves to 10-4 overall and 5-3 in PSAC play while the Eagles drop to 7-8 overall and 2-6 in PSAC action.
The Griffins took a quick 5-0 lead on a layin from Kaufman and an old fashioned three point play from
Sydney Rabold. A three pointer from
Lindsey Mifsud gave SHU a 10-8 lead with 5:30 to play in the quarter. Over the last five and a half minutes, Clarion outscored the Griffins 13-8 to take a 21-18 lead into the second quarter.
After a layin from
Alexandra Hay, Kaufman completed a three point play to put the Griffins back in front 23-22 early in the quarter. Neither team was able to hold more than a four point lead the rest of the half. With Clarion leading 40-36 with less than two minutes remaining, the Griffins went on a 7-0 run to close out the half.
Courtney Cecere and Kaufman each hit layups and Mifsud drained a three in the last 15 seconds to give SHU a 43-40 halftime lead.
Seton Hill began to take control of the game in the third quarter. After Clarion hit a free throw to cut the Griffins lead to 52-49 midway through the quarter, SHU responded with a 10-2 run to push their lead to eleven points at 62-51 with 1:39 left in the half. Kaufman had four points,
Katie Nolan added three and
Halie Torris drilled a three to cap the run. The Griffins carried a 64-54 lead into the fourth quarter.
SHU was able to extend their lead to as many as 13 points in the fourth quarter before the Eagles made one last run. With SHU ahead 75-65, the Eagles used an 8-2 run to cut the lead to four at 77-73 with 1:16 to play. The Griffins closed out the game at the free throw line, hitting all six of their free throws, four by Cecere.
The Griffins finished the game shooting 48% from the floor. SHU was also 18-22 from the free throw line. The squad outrebounded the Eagles 36-31 and only committed 9 turnovers in the win.
Kaufman posted her fifth double double of the season, finishing the game with 26 points and 13 rebounds. She also added 4 assists and 2 steals. Hay was the Griffins second leading scorer with 17 points. She finished with 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Torris also reached double figures with 10 points.
Lindsey Mifsud and
Courtney Cecere each added 8 points in the win.
SHU will return to action on Monday when they hit the road to Erie to take on Gannon at 5:30 PM.
