Late Goal Lifts Griffins to 3-2 Win over Mercyhurst

Maia Cheeks scored with 47 seconds to play to lift the Griffins to a 3-2 win over Mercyhurst at Dick's Sporting Goods Field on Tuesday afternoon.  After a slow start in the first half, the Griffins turned things around in the second half as they outscored the Lakers 3-0 for the come from behind victory.  With the win, the Griffins are 2-3 on the season.

The Lakers came out of the gates fast, firing the first ten shots of the game at Griffin keeper Jane Eberhardt.  Eberthardt stopped the first seven shots she faced but the Lakers were able to finally get on the scoreboard on their tenth shot of the game at the 11:09 mark of the first half.  They pounced on a loose ball in front of the cage to take a 1-0 lead.  Fifty seconds later, the Lakers made it 2-0 on a blast from the top of the circle.  The Lakers took that 2-0 lead into the halftime break.  They held a 14-2 advantage in shots in the half and a 3-1 advantage in penalty corners.

Just 1:43 into the second half, Molly Childress picked up a loose ball near the top of the circle and fired it into the back of the cage to trim the Lakers lead to 2-1 early in the second half.  Childress tied the score at the 48:07 mark of the second half on a penalty stroke goal.  Childress put the shot into the side netting to tie the score at two.  Just over four minutes later, Childress had a chance to give the Griffins a 3-2 lead on her second penalty stroke of the game.  Childress rang her shot off the post and the game remained tied at two.

That play set up the excitement in the final minute of the contest.  With less than a minute to play, Childress sent a pass towards the cage and Cheeks found the loose ball and deposited it behind the goalie to give the Griffins the 3-2 lead with just 47 seconds left in the contest.  The Griffins were able to run out the clock to secure the 3-2 win.

Childress led the team with 5 shots, 4 on goal.  She finished the game with 2 goals and an assist.  Eberhardt finished the contest with 13 saves in cage, earning her second win of the season.

SHU returns to action on Saturday when they host Millersville at 11 AM.
