Two freshman scored their first collegiate goals as the Griffins opened the season with a convincing 6-0 win over Wheeling Jesuit on Thursday afternoon.
Syaani Harris scored twice and
Ally Kaputa scored off a corner kick as the Griffins kick off the year with a win.
Just over twelve minutes into the contest,
Emily LoPresti took a pass from
Madison Schwerzler and put it into the top left corner to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead. The Griffins took advantage of a corner kick in the 37th minute as
Megan Warman's corner kick found the head of Kaputa for a 2-0 Griffin advantage. Three minutes later, Harris found a loose ball in the box and put it just inside the post for her first collegiate goal.
Katie Kimmich assisted on the goal. The Griffins finished the first half with a 11-5 advantage in shots.
The Griffins did not take long to find the back of the net in the second half. Kimmich picked up a loose ball after LoPresti hit the post and put the rebound in the back of the net for a 4-0 Griffin lead early in the second half. In the 65th minute,
Emma Bearinger was taken down in the box. Bearinger calmly deposited the penalty kick into the side netting to extend the Griffins lead to 5-0. With just over two minutes to play in the contest, Harris scored her second goal of the game. The play started as Warman's corner kick was stopped by the keeper.
Taylor Crupie picked up the rebound but her shot was blocked, falling right into the foot of Harris who buried the shot into the net for the 6-0 lead.
Harris led the Griffins with two goals. LoPresti and Kimmich each had a goal and an assist. Bearinger and Kaputa each added a goal and Schwerzler and Warman each added an assist. Harris also led the team with 5 shots. Warman added 4 shots.
Jessica Neill earned the clean sheet with 3 saves in net.
SHU starts PSAC play on Saturday as they host West Chester at 1 PM. The Golden Rams are ranked 9th in the nation in the NSCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.
