The Griffin softball team closed out their regular season with a pair of games at California (PA) on Sunday afternoon looking to clinch second place in the PSAC West. California hung on for a 5-4 win in game one. The Griffins were able to clinch second place in the west with a 14-5 win in game two. SHU is now 21-22 overall and 13-7 in the west.
Starters
Amanda Huff and Portia McBride hooked up in a pitcher's dual with each team putting 0's on the board over the first four innings. Each team had managed just hits over the first four innings.
California finally broke thru in the fifth inning as they scored five times including a three run homer to take a 5-0 lead. SHU responded with three runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Victoria Stock led off the inning with a single. After two outs,
Abbey Suhoski reached on an infield single to put runners on first and second.
Paige Hertzog then hit a missile off the left field foul pole to cut the lead to 5-3.
Amanda Huff led off the seventh with a single.
Hannah LaGrou then reached on an infield single. Stock then doubled to left center field to score a run and put runners on second and third with one out but a groundout and fly out ended the threat.
Stock and Hertzog each had two hits in the loss.
SHU jumped on the Vulcans for three runs in the top of the first inning. After a groundout,
Brooke Bower reached on an infield single.
Ashley Perillo doubled in Bower to give SHU a 1-0 lead. Hertzog then knocked in Perillo with a single. After Huff singled,
Christiana Skrabak doubled in Hertzog for the 3-0 lead. Cal answered with two runs in their half of the first inning.
The Griffins added six runs in the second inning to build a 9-2 lead.
Chelsea Rohan led off the inning with a single. She moved to second on a bunt from
Ashley Boehm. Stock singled to put runners on first and third. Bower walked to load the bases. Perillo then drove in two runs with a single. Huff doubled in two runs and Skrabak hit a sacrifice fly for the 9-2 lead.
SHU built their lead to 12-2 in the fourth inning with three unearned runs. SHU added two more unearned runs in the fifth to build their lead to 14-4.
Huff led the offense by going 4-4 with 3 RBI. Bower was 3-3 with 3 runs scored. Perillo and Skrabak each had two hits and 3 RBI.
The Griffins clinched the second seed in the PSAC Tournament and will take on #2 seed out of the central Lock Haven on Wednesday at 2 PM in Quakertown, PA.
