On a day when the Griffins honored their seven senior members, those seniors did not want their college careers to end as they defeated Kutztown in a win or go home contest on Saturday afternoon. SHU jumped out to a 10-4 halftime lead and cruised to a 14-6 win clinching a PSAC playoff spot as the #6 seed. SHU is 10-7 on the season and 7-5 in PSAC play.
SHU came out of the gates flying as they scored twice in the game's first 2:14 with
Katelyn Cressman and
Nicole Nath each scoring goals. A 45 minute lightning delay did not stop the Griffin momentum as they scored 30 seconds after the game resumed with
Christine Palmeri finishing a pass from
Charlotte Cunningham. Kutztown cut the lead to 3-1 with a goal with 23:27 to play in the half. SHU then took control of the game with a five goal run over an eleven minute stretch to build an 8-1 lead. Nath and Cressman opened the run,
Mackenzie Kilduff scored goals three and four and
Savannah Monroe ended the run with a free position shot goal. The Bears answered back with two goals in 50 seconds but Monroe and
Tristen Hanke scored before the half to give SHU a 10-3 advantage at the halftime break.
After Kutztown scored the first goal of the second half,
Keagan Pontious scored two straight to increase the SHU lead to 12-4 with just over 15 minutes left in the half. KU scored a man up goal but goals from Palmeri and Pontious closed out the Griffin scoring.
Pontious led the Griffins with 3 goals and 2 assists. Cunnigham finished the contest with 5 assists. Palmeri, Nath, Kilduff and Monroe each scored twice in the contest.
Melanie Morgret made 6 saves in the first half of action while
Meghan Hollar recorded 8 saves in the second half.
The Griffins will travel to take on #3 seed Mercyhurst on Tuesday afternoon at 4 PM in the PSAC Quarterfinal.
