ERIE, Pa. -
Christine Palmeri scored four goals, but it wasn't enough as the Seton Hill University women's lacrosse team fell to Mercyhurst University, 11-8, in the opening round of the 2017 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship at Tullio Field in Erie, Pa.
The Griffins finish the 2017 season with a record of 10-8 overall and 7-5 in the PSAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Kristin Anderson scored the first goal of the game to give Mercyhurst a 1-0 lead 2:12 into the game.
- The Griffins answered less than two minutes later when Nicole Nath found the back of the net to tie the game, 1-1.
- Christine Palmeri scored 30 seconds game off of a Charlotte Cunningham assist to put SHU ahead, 2-1.
- Nellie Phillips kept the momentum going with a goal from a Katelyn Cressman assist with 21:57 to go in the first half.
- Mercyhurst then responded with five unanswered goals to finish out the first half. Carly Zimmerman score twice (21:07, 15:09), Janelle Williams scored twice (16:19, 9:02), and Lacey Netti (10:08) also scored as Mercyhurst took a 6-3 lead into halftime.
- Christine Palmeri scored three straight in the second half at 23:07, 22:19, and 18:14 to pull Seton Hill back in the game down 7-6.
- Kristin Anderson and Carly Zimmerman halted the SHU rally with goals the 8:11 and 7:09 to increase the Mercyhurst lead to 9-6.
- SHU's Mackenzie Kilduff netted her first goal of the game with 6:21 remaining to cut the Laker lead to 9-7.
- Mercyhurst responded again with goals by Kristin Anderson (4:50) and Morgan Parker (2:17) to move out to an 11-7 advantage.
- Nicole Nath scored an unassisted goal with 1:02 remaining, but the Griffins were unable to find the back of the net again for the 11-8 final score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Mercyhurst outshot Seton Hill, 28-17 (21-20 on goal).
- Seton Hill lost the turnover battle, 20-16.
- The Griffins were 13-for-21 on clear attempts while Mercyhurst was 16-for-18.
- SHU grabbed 18 ground balls compared to 17 for Mercyhurst.
- Seton Hill led 11-10 in draw controls.
- Megan Hollar had 10 saves for Seton Hill
- Gabby Gravino grabbed 12 saves in the win.
