Softball Clinches PSAC Tourney Berth With Sweep Of Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. - The Seton Hill University softball team clinched a berth in the 2017 PSAC Tournament by sweeping Mercyhurst University, 3-2 and 2-1, Friday afternoon on the campus of Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pa. 

The wins move Seton Hill to 20-21 overall and 12-6 in conference play. Mercyhurst slips to 15-27-1 overall and 6-12 in the PSAC.

Game One

Trailing 1-0, Seton Hill used three runs in the 5th inning to take a 3-1 lead. With two outs, Victoria Stock got things started with a single to right field. Brooke Bower then singled, advancing Stock to second. Ashley Perillo's single moved Bower to second and Stock all the way home to tie the game at 1-1. After Abbey Suhoski singled to load the bases, Paige Hertzog's double scored Perillo and Bower to give SHU it's first lead of the game, 3-1. Mercyhurst would put up a run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Griffins would make quick work of the 6th and 7th innings on their way to the 3-2 win.

Ashley Perillo led the Griffins offense with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with one run scored and an RBI. Paige Hertzog was 2-for-3 with a team-leading two RBI's and SHU's only double.

Amanda Huff (7-2) picked up the game one win for Seton Hill, pitching all seven innings while giving up two earned runs, striking out three, and walking none. Anna Cochis (8-9) went all seven in the loss for Mercyhurst.

Game Two

Paige Hertzog's single in the 1st scored Brooke Bower, and Amanda Huff's single in the 4th scored Hertzog as the Griffins held on for the 2-1 win. 

Bower started off the first inning with one-out double to left field. Ashley Perillo then grounded out to third for the second out, but Bower advanced to third on the throw. After an Abbey Suhoski walk, Hertzog then singled, scoring Bower to take a 1-0 lead. In the 4th inning, Hertzog led off with a single. Christiana Skrabak then grounded out to the pitcher, advancing Hertzog to second. Amanda Huff's single in the infield then scored Hertzog to give SHU a 2-0 advantage. Merychurst would get on the board in the 6th inning, but it wasn't enough as Seton Hill held on for the 2-1 victory.

Paige Hertzog was 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored and an RBI. Amanda Huf was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Victoria Stock and Brooke Bower both had doubles in game two.

Leighann Pettis (4-4) picked up the win, spending all 7.0 innings in the circle for SHU. Pettis gave up one earned run while walking just one. Heather Nye (7-13) got the loss for the Lakers.

The Griffins will head to California (PA) on Saturday to close out the regular season.
