Seton Hill hosted Clarion for Military Appreciation Day on Friday afternoon and we able to sweep the pair of games. SHU held on for a 13-11 win in game one and then completed the sweep with a 5-4 win in game two. SHU improves to 28-15 overall and 13-9 in PSAC West play.
Prior to the game, three Seton Hill students who are in the military threw out the first pitches to kick off the game. Then in between games, the Seton Hill baseball team presented a $500 check to Brandon Rumbaugh for the Its About the Warrior Foundation. Coach Marizzaldi also presented Rumbaugh with his jersey from when he was a member of the Seton Hill baseball team in 2007 before joining the Marines.
The Griffins jumped on Clarion with four runs in the bottom of the first inning of game one with just one hit, thanks to three Clarion errors, three walks and a hit batter. The first two runs scored on errors with
Tyler Sullivan knocking in the third run with a bunt single and
MP Buckley driving in the fourth run with a sacrifice fly. Clarion got three of those runs back in the top of the second inning to cut the lead to 4-3. The Griffins picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the inning to push the lead back to 5-3.
The Golden Eagles put a five spot on the board in the fourth inning to take an 8-5 lead. SHU tied the game at eight with three runs in the fourth inning. Buckley doubled to lead off the inning and
Bayley Jamanis reached on an error. Both runners scored when
Craig Lewis tripled. Lewis then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at eight. Clarion retook the lead thanks to a Griffin error in the fifth inning.
Seton Hill retook the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth.
Tom McCarthy led off the inning with a bunt single.
Ryan Grieco was hit by a pitch and
Adam Ferita walked to load the bases. Sullivan lined out to left field to drive in McCarthy.
Austin Braendel followed with a single to give the Griffins a 10-9 lead. Buckley then cleared the bases with a three run shot to left center field, extending the Griffins lead to 13-9. Clarion got two runs in the seventh but a groundout ended the game.
Brian Dabney earned his second win of the season by throwing the final 3.1 innings. McCarthy, Buckley and Jamanis each had two hits.
Mark Colella homered with two outs in the bottom of the first to give SHU a 1-0 lead. Clarion scored twice in the top of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead. Back to back doubles by Sullivan and Jamanis tied the score at two with Jamanis scoring on an error to give the Griffins a 3-2 lead. The Golden Eagles scored twice in the top of the fourth to retake the lead at 4-3.
That lead did not last very long as Buckley led off the bottom of the inning with a homer to left field. Lewis then singled in Sullivan with the winning run.
Zack Martinelli earned the win, working 6 strong innings.
Kenny Wells earned the save with a perfect seventh.
Jarrett Peters led the offensive attack with two hits.
The Griffins return to action on Saturday when they travel to Clarion to cap off the four game set.
