Seton Hill honored its four senior members who were playing in the final home doubleheader of their careers before the Griffins took on Gannon in a key PSAC West matchup. The Griffins rode the emotion from Senior Day to a 4-0 win over the Knights in game one. Gannon took game two by the score of 1-0 to earn the sweep. SHU is now 15-20 overall and 7-5 in PSAC West play, tied for second with California (PA).
Griffin starter
Amanda Huff and Gannon starter Olivia Gumbita hooked up in an ole fashioned pitchers dual for the first three innings before the Griffins finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning of game one. Each team managed just one base runner thru the first three innings. In the fourth,
Brooke Bower led off reaching on an error. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Ashley Perillo and then to third on a single from
Abbey Suhoski.
Paige Hertzog reached on an infield single to load the bases with one out. After a strikeout, Huff reached on an error with Bower scoring to give SHU a 1-0 lead.
The Griffins were able to add on in the fifth inning.
Danelle Locke opened the inning with a double.
Victoria Stock reached on an error and Bower reached on a bunt single to load the bases with no one out. Perillo followed with a single to center field giving the Griffins a 3-0 lead. Suhoski then made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly.
Huff went the distance to earn her 10th win of the season. She allowed 6 hits while striking out 4 and walking none. Seven different Griffins each had one hit in the contest.
The second game was another pitchers dual with SHU's Huff and
Leighann Pettis battling the Knights Madi Beining. All three pitchers were spectacular with no one giving up an earned run. The only run of the game scored on a controversial play in the sixth inning. Gannon had runners on first and third with one out when their batter fouled out to the catcher for the second out of the inning. The runner from first broke towards second with
Chelsea Rohan making a strong throw to second base. The base umpire originally called the runner out at second but when shortstop
Christiana Skrabak dropped the ball while making a transfer to throw to the plate the umpire reversed his call to safe allowing the runner from third base to score for the only run of the game.
Pettis was the hard luck loser, working the final four innings, giving up just the one unearned run. Three Griffins each had a single hit in the game.
SHU will head to Slippery Rock on Sunday for another important PSAC West doubleheader. The Rock is in fourth place with a 6-8 record.
