After trailing 6-4 at the half, the Griffins outscored Grand Valley State by a 9-3 margin in the second half in route to a 13-9 road win in Allendale, Michigan on Tuesday afternoon. With the win the Griffins improve to 9-6 on the season.
Grand Valley needed just 17 seconds to get on the scoreboard first. They added their second goal and led 2-0 just over five minutes into the half. SHU tied the goal with two straight goals.
Keagan Pontious returned home with her first goal of the contest from
Nicole Nath.
Nellie Phillips tied the score at two with a goal with 19:35 to play in the half. GVSU took a 3-2 lead before
Mackenzie Kilduff and
Savannah Monroe gave SHU a 4-3 lead with 13:46 left in the half. The Lakers scored the final three goals of the half to take a 6-4 lead into the halftime break.
The Griffins came out of the halftime break on fire as they scored the first six goals of the half to build a 10-6 lead midway thru the half. Pontious opened the scoring less than a minute into the half. Less than a minute later,
Tristen Hanke tied the game at six. Then Kilduff began to take over the game as she scored three consecutive goals to give SHU a 9-6 lead with 15:57 to play. Nath and
Charlotte Cunningham assisted on two of the goals. Thirty seven seconds after Kilduff's last goal,
Emma Haley extended the Griffins lead to 10-6. After the Lakers cut the lead to three, SHU got goals from Cunningham and Nath to build their lead back to five at 12-7 with 7:50 to play. GVSU got the next two but Kilduff's last goal with 1:48 to play put the game away.
Kilduff scored a career high 5 goals to lead the Griffins. Pontious finished the game with 2 goals.
Charlotte Cunningham added a goal and 2 assists. Nath and Phillips each had a goal and an assist.
Meghan Hollar finished with 8 saves.
SHU will return to PSAC action on Saturday when they travel to West Chester for a 1 PM start.
