Griffins Split a Wild Doubleheader at Lock Haven

The teams combined for 39 runs on 50 hits in a wild doubleheader at Lock Haven on Tuesday afternoon.  Lock Haven scored 11 runs in the first three innings of game one in route to a 13-3 win.  SHU build a 10-2 lead in game two and had to use a solo homer in the seventh inning to hold on for a 12-11 win.  SHU improves to 20-12 on the season while LHU sits at 20-8.

The Eagles jumped on Griffin starter Don McWreath for five runs in the first inning of game one.  They added six more runs in the third inning to increase their lead to 11-0 after three innings of action.

SHU scored their three runs in the top of the fifth inning.  Tom McCarthy led off the inning with a homer.  After an out Evan Myers homered.  SHU scored their third run after Tyler Sullivan singled and Kailen Grimm scored on an error.  Lock Haven added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings for the 13-3 win.

McCarthy and Myers each had two hits in the game including a homer.

SHU took advantage of six walks in the top of the first inning of game two to take a 5-0 lead.  After a foul out, McCarthy, Austin Braendel and Adam Ferita walked to load the bases.  Mark Colella then cleared the bases with a double to right center field.  Ryan Grieco singled in Colella and he later scored on an error for the 5-0 lead.  LHU responded with two runs in their half of the inning. 

Ferita, Colella and Grieco walked to load the bases after one out in the second.  MP Buckley followed with a grand slam to push the Griffins lead to 9-2.  Colella doubled in Sullivan in the third as SHU extended the lead to 10-2.  The Eagles got three runs back in the third to trim the lead to 10-5.  Lock Haven used a three run homer in the fourth as they cut the lead to 10-9. 

Lock Haven completed their comeback with two runs in the fifth, taking an 11-10 lead.  SHU picked up an unearned run in the sixth to tie the score at 11.  McCarthy homered with two outs in the seventh to give SHU a 12-11 lead.

Kenny Wells earned the win in relief with 2.1 innings of scoreless work.  He gave up two hits and struck out two. 

Colella and Grieco each added two hits in the win.

SHU returns to action this weekend with a four game set against Pitt Johnstown.  SHU hosts the Mountain Cats on Friday and travels to Johnstown on Saturday.
