The Griffins closed out their trip to Thomasville, NC and Finch Field with a pair of games on Sunday. SHU opened the day with a 12-8 slugfest win over #21 St Thomas Aquinas. The Griffins then committed four errors and left nine runners on base in a 9-2 loss to Bloomsburg. SHU is now 3-3 on the season.
Seton Hill took a 2-0 lead over St Thomas Aquinas.
Garret Vrbanic reached on an infield single and moved to second on a bunt hit by
Craig Lewis. They both stole and Vrbanic scored on a throwing error. Lewis then crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by
Mark Colella. St Thomas answered right back with three hits after two outs, the last being a three run homer to right center field.
SHU tied the score at three in the bottom of the second.
Tyler Sullivan singled with one out. Vrbanic was hit by a pitch and Sullivan scored when Lewis' pop up fell between three Spartans five feet in front of the plate. STAC retook the lead with an RBI triple in the top of the third inning. The Griffins responded in their half of the third.
Tom McCarthy was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a double from Colella. They both scored on a bomb to right by
Sam Vilk.
Jarrett Peters followed with a homer of his own to increase the lead to 7-4.
After STAC got to within 7-6, SHU added three unearned runs on no hits in the fifth to push the lead back to 10-6.
Ryan Wardropper drew a bases loaded walk in the inning. St Thomas cut the lead to 10-8 but Colella hit a two out solo homer in the sixth to extend the lead back to 11-8. SHU added another run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by Vrbanic.
Josh Keefe earned the win with five innings of work. He struck out 8 while giving up 6 runs.
Matt Ober earned a save with four innings of work.
Craig Lewis had three hits.
Garret Vrbanic,
Mark Colella and
Sam Vilk each had two hits.
In game two, Vrbanic led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Austin Braendel to give SHU a 1-0 lead. Bloomsburg tied the score in the first and looked to take the lead in the second but
Carl Turner threw out a runner at the plate to end the inning.
SHU took a 2-1 lead when Vrbanic and McCarthy singled to lead off the fifth. Vilk then singled to knock in Vrbanic. That lead did not last long as Bloomsburg hit a leadoff homer in the bottom half of the inning.
Bloomsburg took a 4-2 lead with a two run shot in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Huskies added three more runs on a three run homer in the seventh.
Tom McCarthy led SHU with 3 hits.

The Griffins will take a week off before heading to Winter Haven, Florida for spring break. SHU will open the trip next Saturday against Northwood.
