GREENSBURG, Pa. - Redshirt Sophomore
Keagan Pontious had a game-high four goals as Seton Hill University held on down the stretch to defeat #13 Lock Haven University, 12-11, in PSAC women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Dick's Sporting Goods Field.
The win improves SHU to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC. Lock Haven slips to 4-2 overall, 1-1 in PSAC play.
Pontious led all-scorers with four goals, while
Christine Palmeri added three.
Katelyn Cressman had two goals, and three other players -
Charlotte Cunningham,
Nellie Phillips, and
Tristen Hanke - added goals in the win. Pontious gathered a game-high seven draw controls as SHU was successful in controlling the tempo of the game.
After outscoring Lock Haven, 9-2, in the first half, the Bald Eagles rallied in the second by outscoring SHU, 9-3, to pull within just one goal with 4:57 to go in the game. However,
Katelyn Cressman was able to corral the draw control and the Griffins were able to play keep-a-way for the remainder of the game in route to the 12-11 victory.
For the game, Seton Hill outshot Lock Haven, 31-21 (23-17 on-goal). Lock Haven committed 12 turnovers compared to 10 for Seton Hill. The Griffins held a decisive, 18-7, advantage in draw controls. SHU scored off of six free-position shots, while Lock Haven scored on just four. Lock Haven's Hannah Houde grabbed 11 saves, while SHU's
Meghan Hollar had six saves.
The win marks the first time in program history to defeat Lock Haven University and the first time the women's lacrosse team has defeated two ranked foes in the same week in recent memory.
Seton Hill hits the road on Tuesday, March 28th to face Edinboro University.
