Christine Palmeri took the opening draw control of the second overtime period and deposited it into the back of the cage for the game winner 11 seconds into the second overtime as the Griffins knocked off #10 Mercyhurst in PSAC action on Tuesday afternoon. SHU improves to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in PSAC action while the Lakers drop to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in PSAC action.
SHU and the Lakers exchanged goals in the first ten minutes of action with
Nicole Nath scoring the SHU goal.
Charlotte Cunningham tied the score at two with 17:42 remaining in the first half. The Lakers scored the next two goals to take a 4-2 lead with just over seven minutes remaining in the half. SHU tied the score at four on goals from
Christine Palmeri and
Keagan Pontious before the Lakers scored with 15 seconds remaining in the half to take a 5-4 lead into the halftime break.
The Lakers scored on a man up situation over three minutes into the second half to increase their lead to 6-4. Palmeri trimmed the lead to 6-5 before the Lakers pushed it back to two just over 10 seconds later. The Griffins then went on a four goal run to take a 9-7 lead with 8:52 to play in the second half. Katelyn Cressman and Pontious scored the goals during the Griffin run. Mercyhurst battled back to tie the score at nine, including the last goal with 56 seconds to play sending the game to overtime.
Seton Hill won the draw to open the first overtime but their shot went wide. Mercyhurst's shot also went wide in the first overtime sending the game to a second overtime period.
Palmeri picked up the draw control to open the second OT and raced down the field and deposited the ball into the upper corner of the net for the game winner 11 seconds into overtime.
