The Griffins continued their spring trip with a matchup with the newly ranked #1 University of Tampa Spartans in Tampa. Seton Hill scored runs in each of the first six innings as they knocked off the top ranked team in the country by the score of 11-8. The Griffins improve to 7-4 on the season while the Spartans fall to 16-5 on the season.
Seton Hill got on the board in the top of the first inning thanks to some help from the Spartans.
Craig Lewis reached to start the game on a two base error. After a strikeout,
Tom McCarthy doubled down the left field line to drive in Lewis and give SHU a 1-0 lead.
It did not take long for the top ranked team to respond as they scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 4-1 lead. SHU got two of those runs back in the top of the second inning.
Austin Braendel led off the second with an infield single. He scored on a double to the gap by
Tyler Sullivan. Sullivan scored when Lewis reached on an error. The Griffins tied the game at 4 with a run in the third inning.
Ryan Wardropper doubled off the right field line to score
Mark Colella who reached on an error.
SHU took a 9-4 lead in the top of the fourth inning.
MP Buckley led off the inning with a hit. Lewis was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.
Adam Ferita then bunted and the ball was thrown away allowing a run to score. McCarthy then drove in two with a double down the line. Colella then doubled and Braendel followed with a double giving SHU a 9-4 lead.
Ferita then went yard in the fifth inning as the Griffins extended their lead to 10-4 over the Spartans. The Griffins added another insurance run in the sixth inning as they scored an unearned run. Tampa scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth as the Griffins failed to turn a double play to cut the Griffins lead to 11-7. Tampa scores a single run in the ninth but a fly out to Lewis in deep center field ended the contest.
Don McWreath earned the win. He went 6 innings, giving up 7 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits while striking out 5.
Bryce Spak closed out the game in the final three innings.
Tom McCarthy led the offense with 2 doubles and 3 RBI.

Ryan Wardropper each added two hits for the Griffins.
SHU will play a single game with Ohio Dominican on Tuesday afternoon.
