Griffins Rally From 17 Down for 61-56 Win

Seton Hill made the trip to Edinboro to take on the Fighting Scots in a PSAC West battle on Wednesday evening.  The Griffins trailed by as many as 17 points in the second half, but the Griffins responded with a 30-8 run for a 61-56 road win.  SHU improves to 11-11 overall and 8-10 in PSAC action.

The Griffins are currently tied for fifth place with Slippery Rock.  SHU is one half game behind fourth place Mercyhurst and one game behind third place Pitt Johnstown.

Both teams got off to a good start from the floor as the game was tied at nine just over five minutes into the first half.  Four different Griffins made baskets over that stretch.  Back to back baskets from Fernando Salsamendi gave SHU a 15-11 lead with 12:04 to go in the half.  Edinboro then went on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 19-15 lead.

The Griffins used a basket from Salsamendi and one from Nathan Davis to trim the lead 24-19 with 6:41 to go.  Over the next three minutes, the Scots would outscore the Griffins 8-1 to take a 32-20 lead with 3:25 to play in the half.  Neither team was able to score the final 3:25 and the Scots took a 32-20 lead into the halftime break.

Edinboro was able to extend their lead to 39-24 early in the second half.  Manny Joshua scored five quick points for the Griffins but they could not get any stops and the Scots continued to lead by 15 points at 45-29 with 13:49 to go in the half.  Edinboro extended their lead to 48-31 before the Griffins began to make a run.  SHU went on an 8-0 run capped by a three pointer from Zach Herman to cut the lead to 48-39 with 9:51 to play in the half.

The Scots built their lead back to 53-41 before a basket from Tyler Bowling and two free throws from Damjan Sredanovic trimmed the lead to 53-45.  Herman hit his second three of the half to cut the lead to 53-48 with 4:49 to play.  Sredanovic converted a Spencer Casson steal with a layup to cut the lead to 53-50 with just under three minutes remaining.  Edinboro hit one of two free throws to build their lead to 54-50.

Joshua answered with a basket to cut the lead to 54-52.  The Scots added two free throws to build the lead back to 56-52 with 1:12 to go.  Noah Davis converted an old fashioned three point play with 50 seconds left to cut the lead to 56-55.  The defense forced a turnover and Davis hit both ends of a 1&1 to give SHU a 57-56 lead with 15 seconds to play.  The Griffins fouled with 3 seconds to play but the Scots missed the front end of the 1&1 and after the ball went out of bounds for the rebound, Edinboro was hit with a technical.  SHU closed out the game by hitting its free throws.

Noah Davis led the Griffins with 11 points.  Spencer Casson and Manny Joshua each added 9 points.  Fernando Salsamendi, Damjan Sredanovic and Zach Herman each finished with 8 points.

The Griffins return to action on Saturday when they host California (PA) for Senior Day at 3 PM.  The seniors will be honored prior to the contest.
