Seton Hill broke out the bats to win the rubber game of the three game set in Winston Salem on Sunday afternoon. SHU scored ten runs in the top of the eighth inning to win a wild 19-14 contest over the Rams. The Griffins are 2-1 on the season while the Rams fall to 4-10.
Winston Salem took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Griffins tied the score at one in the third when
Tyler Sullivan,
Garret Vrbanic and
Kailen Grimm singled after two outs. The Rams added two runs in the bottom of the third to retake the lead 3-1. SHU pushed across five runs in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead.
Mark Colella walked and scored when
Tom McCarthy homered. Sullivan broke the tie with a two RBI single. Grimm's RBI groundout pushed the lead to 6-3.
The Rams got single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to tie the score at six. The Winston Salem State bats broke loose for seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 13-6 lead.
The Griffin bats responded with a huge inning of their own, scoring ten runs in the top of the eighth inning. Colella doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a single from McCarthy. Ryan Wardropped drove in a run with a groundout and
Adam Ferita singled in a run to cut the lead to 13-8. A run scored when Sullivan reached on an error and two more crossed the plate when Vrbanic singled. Later Colella cleared the bases with a double to put the Griffins back in front 14-13.
Austin Braendel was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in a run and the final run of the inning scored on an error.
Winston Salem got one back in the bottom of the eighth before SHU added two in the ninth.
Carl Turner and McCarthy each drove in runs in the ninth.
Patrick Boyer earned the win in relief.
Tom McCarthy was 5-6 with a homer and 3 RBI.
Mark Colella was 3-5 with 3 doubles and 4 RBI.
Garret Vrbanic and
Tyler Sullivan each added 3 hits.
SHU returns to action next weekend in Thomasville, NC when they will take on St Thomas Aquinas, LeMoyne and Bloomsburg.
