Seton Hill opened their 2017 season with a road trip to Winston Salem, NC against Winston Salem State. The teams split the pair of games with Winston Salem rallying from 5-0 down for an 11-6 win. SHU earned the split with a 7-6 win in game two.
The Griffins jumped on the Rams for four runs in the first inning of game one.
Garret Vrbanic and
Chris Law singled to open the game.
Craig Lewis walked to load the bases.
Mark Colella drove in two runs with a single.
MP Buckley drove in a run with a sac fly and
Adam Ferita knocked in a run with a sac bunt to give the Griffins a 4-0 lead after a half inning. SHU made it 5-0 off an RBI ground out by Lewis in the second. Winston Salem State got two runs back in the bottom of the second inning. The Rams cut the lead to 5-3 in the fourth inning.
Winston Salem took the lead in the fifth when they scored three runs on just one hit. SHU tied the game at six in the sixth on an RBI double by Law that drove in
Tyler Sullivan. WSSU took the lead for good in the sixth. They added four insurance runs in the eighth.
Chris Law led the Griffins with 3 hits.
Tom McCarthy added 2.
Joe Shaffer suffered the loss on the mound.
SHU again jumped on the Rams for four runs in the top of the first inning of game two. Vrbanic singled to open the game and McCarthy drew a walk. Lewis doubled to drive in both Vrbanic and McCarthy.
Austin Braendel drove in the third run with an RBI groundout.
Ryan Wardropper followed with a solo homer. WSSU answered with two runs in their half of the first.
Braendel added his second RBI of the game when he knocked in Lewis with an RBI single in the third. The Rams got that run back in the fifth to cut the SHU lead to 5-3. Wardropped drove in Colella in the sixth to push the advantage to 6-3. Winston Salem tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. SHU scored the game winning run in the seventh. Sullivan opened the seventh with a double. Vrbanic was hit by a pitch. McCarthy moved both runners up with a sac bunt. After an intentional walk, Colella hit a sac fly to drive in Sullivan with the game winning run.
Lewis, Wardopper and Sullivan each had two hits in the win.
Don McWreath earned the win in relief.
SHU and Winston Salem with play the rubber match of the series on Sunday afternoon.
