Softball Falls To #8 North Georgia, Shepherd In Georgia

DAHLONEGA, Ga. - Seton Hill University started off the 2017 season with losses to #8 North Georgia (12-4), and Shepherd University (7-5), in Day One of the 2017 UNG Captain D's Classic.

Seton Hill is 0-2 on the season, while UNG improved to 12-4 and Shepherd evened their record at 1-1.

Game One - #8 UNG 12, SHU 4

Seton HIl started off hot, scoring four runs in the first inning. Victoria Stock started off the inning with a 3-2 walk. Brooke Bower reached on a throwing error by third base, advancing Stock to second. After a Christiana Skrabak fly out and an Abbey Suhoski strike out, Ashley Perillo drew a 3-1 walk to load the bases. Abbie Thrower then reach on an error by second base, scoring Bower and Stock to make it 2-0. Amanda Huff then doubled down the right field line, scoring Thrower and Perillo to push the lead out to 4-0.

However, the Amber Johns would quiet the SHU bats, keeping the Griffins on their heels for the next four innings. UNG would go on to score two in the third, three in the fourth, and five in the fifth en route to the 12-4 win in five innings.

Amanda Huff picked up the loss, lasting three innings in the circle and allowing seven runs (five earned) on eight hits, while walking two and striking out three. Mackayla Kroll pitched 1.1 innings in relief, giving up five runs (five earned) on six hits.

Amber Johns pitched five innings for North Georgia, giving up four runs on three hits for the Nighthawks. Johns struck out seven and walked five.

Christiana Skrabak, Abbey Suhoski, and Amanda Huff had doubles for the Griffins. 

Game Two - Shepherd 7 , Seton Hill 5

Seton Hill's Christiana Skrabak took a 1-2 pitch out past the left field fence to give SHU a 1-0 lead in the first. Cox homered in the second for Shepherd to tie the game at 1-1. Two innings later, Shepherd grabbed a 2-1 lead via a sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the fourth, SHU grabbed the lead and then some, scoring three runs on four hits. Skrabak started off the rally with a 1-0 single through the right side, and then stealing second. Suhoski would then reach on a fielders choice to shortstop. After a Perillo sac bunt advanced the runners, Abbie Thrower hit a two-RBI triple to make it 3-2 in favor of the Griffins. Huff kept the momentum going with a single to right field, scoring Kapoll, who had pinch ran for Thrower, and giving SHU a 4-2 lead.

After Shepherd made it 4-3 in the top of the fifth, Skrabak hit her second homer of the game, this one coming off of a 1-1 pitch and screaming out of right center to make it 5-3. However, Shepher would go on to score three in the sixth and one more in the seventh for the eventual 7-5 win.

Christiana Skrabak went 3-for-4 in the game, scoring three runs and registering two RBI's. Two of her hits were solo homers. Abbie Thrower went 1-for-3 with two RBI's and SHU's only triple. Skrabak and Allie Harvey two stolen bases between them. 

Amanda Huff was given the loss, pitching 3.2 innings. Huff gave up five runs (one earned) on four hits, while walking three and striking out three. Leighann Pettis threw 3.1 innings in relief, giving up two runs (two earned) on three hits, walking four, and strikign out one Ram batter.

Lori Sturgill picked up the win for Shepherd, lasting 4.0 innings and giving up all five runs on seven hits. Sturgill walked one and struck out two.

Seton Hill will get a second chance at both teams tomorrow. The Griffins will take on Shepherd at 10:00 AM before battling North Georgia at 2:00 PM.
