Griffins Remain Winless on the Season

Seton Hill made the trip north to Erie looking for their first victory of the season on Saturday afternoon.  Even though the Griffins outgained the Lakers and had nine more first downs, the two stats that count the most were in the Lakers favor as SHU had three turnovers in a 35-16 road loss.  SHU drops to 0-8 on the season and Mercyhurst improves to 4-4.

SHU won the toss and drove to the Lakers 30 yard line before turning the ball over on downs.  Mercyhurst scored on their first possession of the game with a nine play, 70 yard drive to take a 7-0 lead.  The Griffins again turned the ball over on downs in Laker territory on their next possession.  Mercyhurst took the 7-0 lead into the second quarter.

On their first drive of the second quarter, the Griffins moved the ball inside the Laker 10 yard line only to lose the ball on their first turnover of the game, a fumble at the three yard line that was recovered in the endzone by the Lakers for a touchback.  Mercyhurst took advantage of the turnover and scored three plays later on a 72 yard touchdown run.  The Lakers extended their lead to 21-0 late in the second quarter when Christian Strong's pass was intercepted and returned 62 yards for a touchdown.  The Griffins finally got on the scoreboard with 1:55 left in the half on a 52 yard strike from Strong to Michael Elardo.  The extra point was missed and SHU trailed 21-6.  Santiago Henao hit a 22 yard field goal with three seconds left in the half and SHU trailed 21-9 at the half.

Mercyhurst opened the second half with an eight play, 72 yard drive, capped with a three yard touchdown pass to extend their lead to 28-9.  The Lakers again took advantage of a SHU fumble and scored their third touchdown off a Griffin turnover to take a 35-9 lead with 4:23 to play in the third quarter.  Late in the quarter, Jarvis McClam scored from three yards out to close out the scoring in the contest.

SHU had 26 first downs to 17 for the Lakers and the Griffins outgained the Lakers by a 505-423 margin.

Strong finished the game 26-40 for 292 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception.  McClam rushed for 129 yards and 1 touchdown.  Elardo pulled in 6 catches for 104 yards and 1 touchdown.  Fardan Allen and Cole Shuker each had 8 tackles on defense.

SHU returns home to host Edinboro next Saturday at 3 PM.
