Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Porteous' Late Game Winner Helps SHU Win Wild Contest

It was not pretty, but in the end Coach Andy McNab and the Griffin women's soccer team escaped with three points on Wednesday afternoon at Dick's Sporting Goods Field.  SHU led Edinboro 4-0 and 5-3 but needed Emma Porteous' goal with 46 seconds remaining for a wild and high scoring 6-5 home win.  With the win, the Griffins stay undefeated at home with a 9-0 record.  SHU is now 11-4-1 overall and 9-4-1 in PSAC action.

With the win, the Griffins are currently in sixth place in the PSAC standings with 28 points.  Their magic number to clinch a PSAC playoff spot is 1 (any combination of a Griffin point or Clarion failing to get all 3 points in their final 3 matches clinches a PSAC playoff spot).  It would be the first PSAC Tournament appearance for the Griffins.

Seton Hill jumped all over the Fighting Scots, scoring four times in the first 22:28 of the game.  The Griffins got on the scoreboard just 3:41 into the contest.  Katie Kimmich drove the end line and found Abigail Skatell open in front of the net and Skatell tapped in the shot from a foot away into the top of the net for a 1-0 Griffin lead.  The Griffins increased their lead to 2-0 in the 14th minute.  Amy Lynch played Emily LoPresti in behind the Scot defense and LoPresti beat the keeper for her 15th goal of the season.

Less than five minutes later, LoPresti played a thru ball and hit Kimmich behind the defense.  Kimmich beat the keeper to extend the SHU lead to 3-0.  At the 22:28 mark of the first half, Syaani Harris sprung Madison Schwerzler free behind the defense and Schwerzler found the left side of the net to give SHU a 4-0 lead with just over 23 minutes to play in the first half.

It only took Edinboro three minutes to cut the Griffins lead to 4-1.  The Fighting Scots trimmed the Griffins lead to 4-2 with just under five minutes to play in the half.  SHU took the 2-0 lead into the halftime break despite being outshot by an 11-9 margin.

In the 67th minute, the Scots cut the Griffins lead to one at 4-3 when they snuck a player behind the Griffin defense.  With under 12 minutes to play in the game, Kimmich extended the Griffins lead back to two at 5-3 with a goal off a pass from Sawyer Patrick.  Edinboro did not stop fighting as they battled back to tie the game at five.  They scored twice within three minutes, the last with 1:12 to play in the half.  It did not take the Griffins long to retake the lead as Lynch played Porteous behind the defense and Porteous beat the Scot keeper with 46 seconds to play for the game winner.

Jessica Neill made 6 saves in net for the win.  Kimmich led the Griffins with 2 goals and an assist.  Lynch finished with two assists and LoPresti added a goal and an assist.

SHU will hit the road on Saturday as they travel to #4 Kutztown for their final regular season PSAC road contest of the season.
