The Griffin field hockey team had the mammoth challenge of taking on the number one team in the nation, Shippensburg, on Tuesday afternoon. Ship jumped out to a 6-0 halftime and defeated the Griffins by a 9-2 score. SHU falls to 3-12 overall and 0-7 in PSAC play while the Raiders improve to 12-2 overall and 7-0 in PSAC play.
Shippensburg scored six goals in the first half to take a 6-0 lead at the halftime break. They held a 17-3 advantage in shots and a 9-1 advantage in corners in the half.
The Raiders opened the scoring just 2:25 into the second half as they took a 7-0 lead. The Griffins got on the scoreboard in the 44th minute. SHU scored off a corner when
Maia Cheeks passed the ball to
Ashley Curnow who's shot found the back of the cage, cutting the lead to 7-1. After the Raiders increased their lead to 8-1, Cheeks finished a pass from
Molly Childress in the crease to trim the lead to 8-2 with just over 12 minutes to play in the game.
Seton Hill managed six shots in the second half and only trailed in corners by an 8-7 margin.
Alexandra Piekarz started in cage and made three saves.
Elizabeth Armbruster finished the game and made 12 saves.
The two goals are the most scored by a PSAC opponent against the Raiders since West Chester scored twice on October 3rd.
SHU returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Mansfield for a 5 PM start.
