Seton Hill and Gannon met up on Friday evening in the McKenna Center in a battle of two of the top two teams in the PSAC. The match did not disappoint as it went five sets with the visiting Golden Knights earning a hard fought 3-2 victory. Gannon used a 9-0 run to turn a 7-4 deficit into a 13-7 lead in the fifth set. With the win, Gannon improves to 17-3 overall and 7-1 in PSAC play. SHU drops to 13-4 overall and 6-2 in PSAC play.
Gannon led throughout the first set and extended their lead to 17-11 just over midway thru the set. SHU got to within three points at 19-16 after a
Viktoria Farian kill but would get no closer as the Knights took a 1-0 lead following a 25-19 first set win.
The Knights jumped out to early 8-3 and 12-6 leads over the Griffins in the second set. SHU then went on an 8-2 run to tie the set at 14.
Maggie Murray had three kills during the Griffin run. Gannon retook a 19-16 lead but two straight kills from
Rachel Satira helped the Griffins take a 20-19 lead. The Griffins extended their lead to 23-20 before a block from
Leah Bisignani and
Jillian Livorse gave SHU the set (25-23) and evened the match at one.
In the third set, the Griffins jumped out to the early lead at 9-6. Gannon responded with a 10-4 run to take a 16-13 lead. Back to back blocks from Satira and Farian cut the Knights lead to 20-19. Gannon ran off three straight before the Griffins answered with three straight of their own to trim the lead to 23-22. Two straight from Gannon gave the Knights a 2-1 lead in the match after a 25-22 win.
The early part of the fourth set was tightly played until the Griffins went on a 5-0 run to take a 12-8 lead. Bisignani had two kills during the run. Later in the set, Gannon scored four straight to take a 21-20 lead. Kills from Murray, Bisignani and Farian gave SHU a 23-22 lead. After a Gannon point, two Gannon errors tied the match at two and gave SHU a 25-23 win.
The Griffins came out hot in the fifth set. A block from Bisignani and Murray opened the set and a kill from Murray gave SHU a 2-0 lead. Two more kills from Farian helped the Griffins jump out to a 7-4 lead. From that point on it was all Knights as they went on a 9-0 run and closed the match on a 11-3 run to earn a 15-9 fifth set win.
Farian paced the Griffins with a match high 18 kills. She also added 15 digs. Bisignani added 12 kills and 7 blocks. Murray played a great all around game as she finished with 9 kills, 35 assists and 5 blocks. Livorse finished with 8 kills and 13 digs.
Mary Baich had a match high 30 digs.
The Griffins return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Mercyhurst at 1 PM.
