Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Gallagher Leads Griffins to 5-2 Win Over NYIT

Senior Curtis Gallagher scored twice and assisted on two more goals as the Griffins won a high scoring affair over NYIT at home on Wednesday afternoon.  The Griffins jumped out to a 3-0 lead only to see NYIT score twice within five minutes but netted two more goals for the 5-2 win.  SHU improves to 4-3 overall after the nonconference victory.

The Griffin opened the scoring in the ninth minute.  Joe Smith found Curtis Gallagher with a ball from midfield and Gallagher chipped the ball over NYIT keeper who left his line to give the Griffins the early 1-0 lead.  Just over five minutes later the Griffins increased the lead to 2-0.  Clint McElheny took a free kick near midfield and found Gallagher who slipped a pass to Rory McKinnon who beat a diving keeper for the Griffins second goal of the game.  The Griffins would carry that 2-0 lead into the halftime break.

Smith increased the Griffins lead to 3-0 with a great individual effort in the 70th minute.  He first beat an NYIT defender then dribbled around the keeper before depositing the ball into the empty net for the Griffins third goal of the game.  The Griffins seemed to relax a little after that goal as NYIT began to battle back.  The Bears scored their first goal of the game in the 78th minute to cut the lead to 3-1.  Less than five minutes later they trimmed the lead to one after a header goal off a corner kick.  SHU responded well and put the game away with two late goals.  Gallagher scored his second of the game off a nice feed from Lloyd Davies in the 85th minute.  Just a minute and 27 seconds later SHU increased the lead to 5-2 on a goal from Harry Beattie.  Beattie finished on Gallagher's second assist of the game.

Jacin Smith recorded two saves in the victory.

SHU will return to PSAC play on Saturday when they host Mercyhurst at 2 PM.
