Seton Hill hosted Kutztown on Saturday afternoon in the home opener for the Griffins, looking to go 3-0 for the first time since the 2008 season. Seton Hill rode a huge offensive day in moving to 3-0 with a 44-22 victory over Kutztown. The Griffin offense rolled up 697 yards of total offense, a new school record, in the win.
The Griffin defense held Kutztown to two three and outs on their first two possessions, allowing the Griffins to take the lead on their second possession of the game. On the seventh play of the drive,
Christian Strong hit
Ardell Brown with a 37 yard touchdown to give the Griffins the 7-0 lead midway thru the first quarter. SHU forced a punt on the next KU possession and took over at their own 13 yard line. After a two yard loss on first down, Strong hit
Norman Darden with a swing pass and Darden raced down the sideline for an 89 yard touchdown catch to extend the SHU lead to 13-0. The first quarter would end with the Griffins leading 13-0. SHU put up 242 yards in the first quarter, 221 in the air.
Seton Hill increased their lead to 20-0 on their first drive of the second quarter. They went 75 yards in 9 plays, capped by a 9 yard run from
Khalil Howard. The Griffin defense continued with their shutout bid as they forced KU to turn the ball over on downs on their next possession, giving the SHU offense the ball at the KU 43. SHU drove to the KU 17 yard line but an interception ended the drive. The SHU defense again forced a turnover on downs, giving the ball back to the offense at their own 36 yard line. The offense would only need three plays to convert. Strong found Brown racing down the sideline and hit him for a 60 yard touchdown pass to push the Griffin lead to 27-0 with 6:31 left in the half. Kutztown would finally break the shutout bid after taking over after a second SHU interception. The Golden Bears would drive 80 yards in 9 plays to cut the SHU lead to 27-6 with 46 seconds left in the half.
SHU took the opening drive of the second half and marched 68 yards in just 6 plays for the half's first scoring play. Howard scored his second TD of the game, this one from 11 yards out to give SHU a 34-6 lead. Kutztown answered right back with a scoring drive of their own. They went 65 yards in just 6 plays and added a two point conversion to trim the SHU lead to 34-14 with 10:21 to play in the third quarter. KU tried a surprise onside kick after the score but
Travis Day pounced on the ball after a scrum to give the Griffins possession. SHU was able to take advantage of the short field and went 44 yards in 6 plays for the score. Strong found
Miles Sexton in the back of the endzone for a 12 yard touchdown pass to extend the Griffins lead to 41-14 with 7:54 to play in the third quarter.
Keyshawn Petit-Frere ended the next Golden Bear drive with a forced fumble at the SHU five yard line,
Dexter Williams returned the ball back to the SHU 29 yard line.
Seton Hill drove all the way to the Kutztown 11 yard line but was forced to attempt a field goal.
Santiago Henao hit from 28 yards out on the second play of the fourth quarter to extend the SHU lead to 44-14. Kutztown scored on their next possession to trim the lead to 44-22 with 10:32 to play in the game. The Griffins were able to eat alot of clock wit their ground game and
Fardan Allen intercepted a pass on the next Kutztown possession and the Griffin offense was able to run out the clock and secure the 3-0 start.
Seton Hill had 32 first downs to 27 for Kutztown. SHU led in total yardage by a 697-426 margin. SHU passed for 517 yards and added 180 on the ground.
Christian Strong finished the day going 32-47 for 517 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Khalil Howard rushed for 112 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Ardell Brown caught 9 passes for 188 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Norman Darden added 5 catches for 134 yards and 1 touchdown.
David Gutzmore finished the game with 13 total tackles including one sack.
Nicholas Boynton added 8 tackles.
SHU will now open PSAC West play next week when they take on unbeated California (PA) starting at 3 PM.
