Griffins Drop PSAC West Opener to Cal

Seton Hill hosted California (PA) in the PSAC West opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Offutt Field.  Both teams entered the contest with undefeated records heading into conference play.  It would be California who would end the day with the still undefeated record as they jumped out to a 38-3 halftime lead and cruised to a 59-17 victory over the Griffins.  SHU falls to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in PSAC West play while Cal improves to 3-0 overall and 0-1 in PSAC West play.

Seton Hill won the toss and elected to take their choice in the second half, giving the Vulcans the ball to start.  Cal returned the opening kick to the SHU 35 and scored 5 plays later on a three yard run.  After two first downs to start their first drive SHU fumbled on a sack, giving Cal the ball at the SHU 47.  Cal needed just six plays to extend their lead to 14-0 less than five minutes into the contest.  The Griffins got to the Cal 36 on a possession late in the quarter but two penalties backed them up and forced a punt.  Cal then moved the ball 81 yards in 9 plays and settled for a 30 yard field goal to make the score 17-0 after one quarter of action.

On their first possession of the second quarter, the Griffins got all the way to the Cal 17 yard line before getting sacked and moved back to the 25.  Santiago Henao then hit from 42 yards out to cut the Cal lead to 17-3 with 11:39 left in the second quarter.  Both teams were forced to punt on their next possession.  Cal then used a short field after a long punt return to set up another touchdown drive.  The Vulcans went just 34 yards in 6 plays for a 24-3 lead with 4:45 left in the half.  The Griffins fumbled on their next drive and the Vulcans took advantage on their very first play connecting on a 24 yard touchdown pass.  After a three and out for the Griffins, Cal scored their final touchdown of the half with 40 seconds to play, taking a 38-3 halftime lead.

After Seton Hill went three and out to open the second half, Cal marched 51 yards in just six plays to increase their lead to 45-3.  SHU answered right back on their next drive as Christian Strong found Norman Darden in the back of the end zone for a six yard touchdown pass.  SHU trailed 45-10 with 9:15 left in the third quarter.  Cal capped off the third quarter scoring with a 10 yard touchdown pass with 2:21 to play to extend their lead to 52-10,

California drove 90 yards on their first possession of the fourth quarter to increase their lead to 59-10.  SHU answered right back on their next possession.  Strong hit Ardell Brown for a 25 yard gain to the Cal 22.  Cory Cavanaugh replaced Strong at quarterback and completed the drive, hitting Brown with a 15 yard touchdown pass to end the scoring in the game.

First downs were nearly identical with Cal having 28 and Seton Hill 27.  The Vulcans outgained the Griffins 532-435 in total offense with SHU holding a 384-311 advantage in the air.
