The Griffins women's soccer team opened their 2016 campaign with a home matchup against PSAC foe Pitt Johnstown on Wednesday afternoon. SHU got a goal from three different players in route to a season opening 3-1 win. It's the third straight season the Griffins have opened the year with a win.
SHU opened the scoring just 2:24 into the game. The Griffins were on a break and got fouled near the top of the box, resulting in a yelllow card and a free kick for the Griffins. Seton Hill took advantage of the free kick when
Emily LoPresti's shot cleared the wall and then beat the goalie for her first goal of the season. The Griffins then controlled the play for the majority of the half, limiting the Mountain Cats possession. UPJ then took advantage of a Griffin turnover in their own end and scored to tie the game at one with 3:37 to play in the half. The game entered the halftime break tied at one. SHU held an 8-3 advantage in shots in the half.
Seton Hill continued to dominate play in the second half but were unable to find the back of the net in the early portion of the half. The Griffins finally broke through thirty minutes into the half when
Bri Kostan hit
Emma Porteous with a pass and Porteous beat the UPJ keeper from 35 yards out to give SHU the 2-1 lead. Just over seven minutes later
Taylor Crupie scored her first collegiate goal to increase the lead to 3-1. Crupie and
Madison Schwerzler executed a perfect give and go for the goal.
The Griffins outshot the Mountain Cats 16-2 in the second half and led the Cats in shots on goal by a 10-4 margin. SHU also held a 13-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Jessica Neill recorded 3 saves in net for the win.
SHU will continue PSAC play on Saturday when they hit the road to Erie, PA for a matchup with Gannon.
