The Griffin men's soccer team hit the road to Wheeling, WV to open their 2016 season against Wheeling Jesuit. SHU scored 2:23 into the first overtime period for a 2-1 victory. SHU dropped a 2-0 decision at home to Wheeling Jesuit in the season opener last season.
SHU jumped on Wheeling Jesuit early in the contest with two quick shots on goal in the first six minutes of the contest. The Griffins then got on the scoreboard in 13th minute of the game.
Joe Smith scored his first goal of the season when he scored from the middle of the field into the top right corner of the net. SHU held that 1-0 lead at the halftime break. SHU outshot Wheeling 6-5 in the first half with all 6 shots being shots on goal.
Wheeling tied the game at one with 6:25 left in the second half. The game remained tied at one after regulation forcing the game into overtime. The overtime period wouldn't last too long as SHU won the game 2:23 into the overtime period.
Curtis Gallagher pounced on a rebound and put it into the corner of the net for the game winning goal.
Jacin Smith recorded one save, playing the second half and overtime period, to earn the win.
Seton Hill outshot Wheeling 15-10 and 12-3 in shots on goal.
SHU returns to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Ohio Valley for another non conference game.
