Perry DellaValle was nearly perfect and led the Griffins to the second round of the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament with a 3-0 win over Shepherd. DellaValle allowed just one hit and faced just one over the minimum in the win. SHU improves to 40-16 overall. It's the sixth straight season the Griffins have won at least 40 games.
Seton Hill got two runners on with two outs in the top of the first but could not score.
Anthony Fanelli was hit by a pitch with two outs and
Chris Miller doubled down the left field line to put runners on second and third but a ground out to third ended the inning.
The Griffins got on the board in the top of the second.
Mark Colella led off the inning with a bomb over the left field wall.
Colton Carney then reached second base on an error. He scored when
Tyler Sullivan singled thru the left side to give SHU a 2-0 lead.
Garret Vrbanic homered over the Chick-Fil-A sign in left center field to lead off the top of the fifth inning, extending the SHU lead to 3-0.
That was all DellaValle would need as he held the Shepherd bats in check throughout the game. Perry had 6 innings where he retired the Rams in order. After giving up the only hit of the game in the fourth, DellaValle got a double play ball to end the inning. He hit a batter with two outs in the seventh but picked him off to end the inning.
DellaValle threw his sixth complete game and second shutout of the season. He struck out five hitters and needed just 88 pitches in the game.
Tyler Sullivan and
Mark Colella each had two hits for the Griffins in the win.
SHU will now play #1 seed Millersville at 3 PM on Friday afternoon.
