It was win or go home for the Seton Hill women's lacrosse team as they hosted Slippery Rock on Tuesday afternoon with a PSAC Tournament spot on the line. Griffin senior
Emily Fagan and the rest of the senior class would not let it be their last game as Fagan finished with 9 points to lead the Griffins to an 18-13 victory. With the win, the Griffins earned a PSAC Tournament spot and will be the fifth seed in the PSAC Tourney. SHU finishes the regular season with an 8-9 overall record and a 7-5 mark in PSAC play. SHU closed out the regular season winning seven of its final ten games.
It was a record setting performance for Fagan as she set two new school records in the win. She is now the all time leading scorer with 289 points. Emily also now holds the Seton Hill career record for goals with 216. She set the new point record with an assist on a
Keagan Pontious goal 5:40 into the first half. Fagan broke the school record for goals with her sixth goal of the game at the 17:10 mark of the second half.
The Griffins did not get off to the start they were wanting as Slippery Rock scored the first goal of the game 2:11 into the half. Seton Hill tied the game two minutes later on a free position shot goal from
Emily Fagan.
Keagan Pontious then gave the Griffins a 2-1 lead off a pass from Fagan. Just over a minute later the Rock tied the score at two.
Renee Kania then scored twice to give the Griffins a 4-3 lead with 21:02 left in the half. With just under 17 minutes to go in the half, SRU tied the score at four.
This is where the Griffins started to take over the game. SHU scored four times over a two minute span to increase their lead to 8-4. Fagan scored the first two goals of the run,
Savannah Monroe added her first of the game and
Alessandra Nicholas ended the four goal run. Monroe kept the run going with a free position shot goal with 12:22 to play in the half. The Rock ended that run with a goal but Fagan answered right back with her fourth of the game pushing the lead back to 10-5.
Katelyn Cressman added a free position shot goal to extend the SHU lead to 11-5. The Rock scored the final goal of the half.
Seton Hill opened the scoring in the second half with two goals in 17 seconds. Kania scored the first goal and
Charlotte Cunningham finished a feed from Fagan to put the Griffins ahead 13-6. The Rock scored the next two goals before
Alexis Petrarca found the back of the net giving SHU a 14-8 lead with 22:24 to play. Fagan then added her fifth of the game, giving SHU a 15-8 lead. After a Rock goal, Fagan found the back of the net for a sixth time extending the lead to 16-9 with just over 17 minutes to play.
Slippery Rock then made their final run at the Griffins, scoring three straight goals, forcing a Griffin timeout. Pontious was then able to end the Rock run with a caused turnover. Keagan took the ground ball and raced down the field, beating the SRU goalie to give SHU a 17-12 lead. Pontious then scored her third of the game pushing the SHU lead to 18-12 with just over six minutes to play. SHU gave up one more goal but after Nicholas won the draw control, the Griffins were able to run out the clock.
Fagan led the Griffins with 9 points on 6 goals and 3 assists.
Keagan Pontious and
Renee Kania finished the game with 3 goals each. Kania added 2 assists while Pontious finished with two.
Savannah Monroe added two goals.
Alessandra Nicholas added 1 goal and 2 assist while
Alexis Petrarca finished with 1 goal and 1 assist.
Seton Hill advances to the PSAC Tournament as the #5 seed. The Griffins will open PSAC Tourney play on Saturday afternoon at noon against #4 Lock Haven.
