Game Recap: Softball |

Griffins Swept in Final Day of Spring Trip

The Griffin softball team closed out its spring trip in Clermont, FL with a pair of games against softball powers from the midwest.  Seton Hill took on Southern Indiana in the first game of the doubleheader and closed out the day with a matchup against defending Midwest Regional champion Indianapolis.  SHU was defeated in 5 innings by the score of 11-0 to the Screaming Eagles and then dropped a tough 1-0 decision to UIndy in the nightcap.  SHU finishes the Florida trip with a 3-7 record.

Southern Indiana took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  The Eagles scored 6 runs on 5 hits in the third inning to increase their lead to 7-0 over the Griffins.  Monica Joseph got the Griffins first hit with a two out single in the bottom of the third.  USI added to their lead in the top of the fourth with a two run homer.  USI hit another two run homer in the fifth to push their lead to 11-0.  Michaela LeDonne added a two out single in the bottom of the fifth for the Griffins other hit.

The Griffins Leighann Pettis and Indy's Miranda Tamayo hooked up in a pitchers dual in game two of the doubleheader.  Pettis got a line out double play to end the bottom of the first inning.  The Greyhounds scored their lone run in the bottom of the third after two outs.  They used a walk and two singles to score the lone run of the game.  SHU loaded the bases in the fourth when Victoria Stock led off with a walk.  After an out, Ashley Perillo drew a walk.  Abbey Suhoski then singled to load the bases but a fielders choice and a strikeout ended the threat.  Stock ended the bottom of the fifth by throwing out a Indy runner at the plate.

Pettis was the hard luck loser, going the distance, giving up the 1 run on 7 hits while striking out 2.

The Griffins will return to action on March 12-13 at the WV Wesleyan Tournament in Salem, VA.
