Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Griffins Fall in Heartbreaking Four OT Contest

The Seton Hill women's lacrosse team opened PSAC play on Tuesday afternoon in Erie against Mercyhurst.  The Griffins got seven goals from Emily Fagan and 19 saves from Meghan Hollar but it was not enough as the Griffins dropped a heartbreaking four overtime contest with the Lakers 12-11.  SHU drops to 1-4 overall on the season.

Mercyhurst scored the first two goals of the contest and led 2-0 just over two minutes into the contest.  Alexis Petrarca scored the first Griffin goal off a feed from Alessandra Nicholas to cut the lead to 2-1.  Emily Fagan then scored back to back goals to give the Griffins a 3-2 lead with 11:42 to play in the first half.  Nicholas and Renee Kania assisted on the Fagan goals.  After Mercyhurst tied the score at three, Fagan scored twice in 41 seconds to give SHU a 5-3 lead.  Kania assisted on both Fagan goals.  Petrarca scored the final Griffin goal of the half as SHU took a 6-5 advantage into the halftime break.

Fagan scored her fifth goal of the game two minutes into the second half to increase the SHU lead to 7-5.  The Lakers answered with two goals to tie the contest at 7.  Fagan responded with her sixth of the game to give SHU an 8-7 lead with 24:36 to play in the half.  After the Lakers scored two straight, Katelyn Cressman scored on a free position shot to tie the score at 9.  The Lakers answered with a free position goal of their own.  Fagan followed with her seventh of the game to tie the score at 9 with just over 10 minutes to play in the half.  Nicholas then scored on a free position shot with 8:37 to play, giving the Griffins an 11-10 lead.  The Lakers tied the score at 11 and neither team was able to score over the final six minutes of the game, sending the game to overtime.

Neither team registered a shot in the first overtime period.  Meghan Hollar made a huge save on a free position shot for the Lakers in the second overtime period.  Fagan won the draw control to open the third period and after a SHU timeout, Fagan's shot was stopped by the Laker keeper with 1:45 to play in the overtime period.  The Lakers then controlled the ball the rest of the OT period with Hollar making one more save in the third OT period.  SHU won the draw control to open the fourth quarter with Nicole Nath earning the DC but a SHU turnover gave the ball back to the Lakers who were finally able to get the game winner with 55 seconds left in the fourth overtime period.

Emily Fagan led the SHU offense with 7 goals.  Alexis Petrarca finished with 2 goals.  Alessandra Nicholas added 1 goal and 3 assists.  Renee Kania finished with 3 assists.  Meghan Hollar finished the game with 19 saves in cage.

Fagan's 7 goals are the most since assistant coach Morgan Cain scored 8 goals in a win against Bridgeport on May 7, 2011.  Hollar's 19 saves are the most since Nadine Wallace recorded 20 saves in a game against IUP on April 18, 2011.

SHU will continue PSAC play on Saturday when they travel to Lock Haven.
