Seton Hill hosted Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon looking to sweep the season series from the Rock. The Griffins jumped out to a 23-5 lead after the first quarter and outscored the Rock 23-7 in the fourth quarter in route to a key 76-45 PSAC West victory. With the win, the Griffins improve to 13-10 overall and 9-8 in conference play. SRU drops to 11-12 overall and 7-10 in PSAC action. The victory puts the Griffins into a tie with Mercyhurst for fifth place in the conference standings.
Slippery Rock scored the first basket of the game and led 4-2 early in the contest but that would be as close as the Rock would get. Back to back free throws and a basket from
Chrisanna Green gave SHU a 6-4 advantage. SRU then hit one of two free throws to trim the lead to 6-5 with 7:01 to play in the quarter. That would be the last point the Rock would score in the quarter as SHU closed the half on a 17-0 run to take a 23-5 lead after one quarter.
Alexandra Hay drilled two three pointers during the run for the Griffins.
Hay started the scoring for the Griffins with a steal and a coast to coast layup just 12 seconds into the quarter that increased the SHU lead to 25-5. SHU would then go cold from the floor and not score again until the 2:51 mark of the quarter when Hay drilled another jumper to give the Griffins a 27-13 lead with 2:51 to play in the half. The Rock was able to trim the lead to 29-19 before
Jenna Kaufman hit the final basket of the half, giving the Griffins a 31-19 halftime lead.
The Rock opened the second half on an 8-2 run to trim the SHU lead to 33-27 with 6:48 to play in the third quarter.
Halie Torris then got hot for the Griffins scoring eight points in a 2:17 stretch to increase the SHU lead back to 45-33 with 3:19 left in the quarter.
Kinross Obiefule added four points before the end of the quarter to give SHU a 53-38 advantage after three quarters of play.
The visitors were able to cut into the SHU lead and trailed 56-43 with 7:37 before Kaufman drilled a three pointer to send the Griffins on a 20-2 as the Griffins were able to pull away for the 76-45 victory.
Seton Hill held the Rock to just 23% from the floor including only 15% in the first half. Thats the lowest shooting percentage against the Griffins this season. The Griffins were able to shoot 46% from the floor. SHU also held a huge advantage in rebounds. Seton Hill outrebounded the Rock 58-39. That is the third highest rebound total in school history.
Jenna Kaufman continued her stellar play with a double double of 24 points and 10 rebounds. Kaufman added 2 assists.
Halie Torris also finished with a double double of 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Alexandra Hay was the third Griffin in double figures with 14 points.
Chrisanna Green pulled down a game high 16 rebounds while finishing with 4 points, 5 assists and 3 blocks.
The Griffins continue PSAC West play with another key battle against Gannon on Wednesday evening. The Knights are currently second in the PSAC West standings and the Griffins upset them earlier this season on their own floor.
