MANSFIELD, Pa. -
Spencer Casson scored 11 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and had 10 blocks as the Seton Hill University men's basketball team slipped past Mansfield, 71-67, in their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opener Saturday afternoon at Decker Gymnasium on the campus of Mansfield University.
Seton Hill is now 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC. Mansfield is 2-2 and 0-1 in conference play.
The game featured only two lead changes and two ties. Seton Hill led by as many as 14 in the first half (27-13, 7:52) only to see Mansfield whittle away at that lead before taking a 42-40 lead with 12:16 remaining in the second half. However, layups by
Trevor Lecuona and
Fernando Salsamendi retook the lead and the Griffins held on the rest of the way for the 71-67 win.
Spencer Casson scored 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting while grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and 10 blocks.
Nathan Davis had 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting,
Noah Davis had 14 points on 5-of-15 from the floor, and
Fernando Salsamendi had 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting and nine rebounds. As a team, Seton Hill was 28-of-66 from the floor for 42.4%, including 5-of-19 from three-point range and 10-of-13 from the line.
Mansfield was led by Malik Carter's game-high 21 points. matt Tamanosky and Cedrick Powell had 15 and 11 points, respectively. Tamanosky grabbed 11 rebounds with Gerasimos Koutoufas had 10. Mansfield made 27 of their 72 shots from the floor for 37.5%, including 4-of-12 from long-range and 9-for-13 from the charity stripe.
SHU's bench narrowly out-performed Mansfield's bench, 10-8. The Mountaineers were better inside the paint, scoring 40 points inside the painted area compared to 36 for the Griffins.
The Griffins will visit Lock Haven University on Sunday for a 3:00 PM tip-off.
