SHU Sweeps Cal to Open Southwest Division Play

The Griffins opened up PSAC Southwest Division play against rival California (PA) on Tuesday evening in the McKenna Center.  SHU completed a sweep of the Vulcans with a great all around performance.  SHU improves to 14-5 overall and 6-1 in PSAC play while the Vulcans fall to 13-5 overall and 5-2 in PSAC play. 

The first set was close early until the Griffins went on a 5-1 run to take an 8-4 lead.  Kills from Cassie Hausfeld, Jenna Sassack and Rachel Satira assisted in the run.  The Griffins extended their lead in the set with a 5-0 run on back to back kills from Katie Wenson and a solo block from Leah Bisignani.  Cal got to within 17-14 but another 5-0 SHU run gave SHU control of the first set.  SHU ran off the final three points of the set for a 25-17 win.  Mary Baich's ace set up set point and Hausfeld ended the set with a kill. 

California took a 16-11 lead in the second set before the Griffins began to make their run.  This time the Griffins went on a 6-0 run with back to back kills from Satira and a block from Satira and Bisignani starting the run.  A Griffin service error tied the set at 20 before the Griffins closed it out with a 5-0 run.  Wenson, Sassack and Hausfeld had kills and Murray and Sassack combined for a block on set point giving SHU a 25-20 win.

Seton Hill led 6-4 early in the third before Cal ran off five straight to take a 9-6 lead.  The Griffins used a 5-0 run of their own to take a 14-12 lead.  The Vulcans tied the set at 14 but SHU then went on a 6-1 run to take a 20-15 lead.  Maggie Murray had a kill followed by an ace to begin the run.  Cal got to within two at 24-22 but Murray and Sassack combined for a block on match point giving the Griffins a 25-22 win and a sweep of the match.

Cassie Hausfeld led the Griffins with 11 kills.  She added 10 digs for a double double.  Leah Bisignani and Rachel Satira each added 6 kills.  Bisignani finished with 5 blocks while Satira had 4.  Katie Wenson had a great all around game with 5 kills, 14 digs, 3 aces, 2 blocks and 2 assists.  Maggie Murray finished with 24 assists and 3 kills with 3 aces.  Hannah Moeller ended the match with 12 digs.

SHU will head to Erie this weekend to take on the Northwest Division.  SHU will plat at Mercyhurst on Friday evening and Gannon on Saturday afternoon.
