Five Griffins Score in Double Figures in OT Win Over California

Seton Hill returned to PSAC West action on Saturday afternoon as they traveled to California PA to take on the defending national champions.  California led by as many as 16 points but the Griffins battled back to force overtime after Alexandra Hay's three pointer at the buzzer which tied the game at 70.  The Griffins then closed out the game with a defensive stand to preserve the 83-81 victory.  SHU improves to 9-7 overall and 5-5 in PSAC play.
 
Mariah Wells scored seven of the Griffins first ten points as they trailed the Vulcans 12-10 at the first quarter media timeout.  Cal was able to build their lead to 19-10 but baskets from Lindsey Mifsud and Hannah Laslo trimmed the lead to 19-15 at the end of the first quarter. 
 
Cal opened the second quarter on a 9-2 run forcing a SHU timeout with Cal leading 28-17 with 6:52 left in the quarter.  The Vulcans were able to extend their lead to 39-23 with 1:48 left in the half.  SHU closed the half on a 7-0 run over the last 1:05.  Alexandra Hay opened the run with a three pointer then found Chrisanna Green for a layup before hitting a layup at the buzzer to trim the lead to 39-30 at the half. 
 
SHU opened the half on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 39-36.  Jenna Kaufman's layup with 6:30 to play in the quarter trimmed the Cal lead to 41-40.  Mifsud hit a layup with 4:40 to play to trim the lead to 43-42 before the third quarter media timeout.  A three from Hay gave the Griffins their first lead of the game and Kinross Obiefule scored a layup to give SHU a 47-43 lead with 2:25 left in the quarter.  Cal then outscored the Griffins 7-0 to take a 50-47 lead at the end of the quarter. 
 
Cal led by as many as five points in the quarter but back to back baskets from Hay and Kaufman cut the Cal lead to 60-59 with 4:30 to play in the quarter.  Cal then hit four free throws to increase the lead to 64-59 with 1:55 left.  Wells then drilled a three to cut the lead to 64-62 with 1:40 left.  Two Cal free throws pushed the lead back to 66-62.  Wells answered with two free throws to cut the lead to 66-64 and the SHU defense forced a turnover that gave SHU the ball with 35 seconds left.  SHU then turned the ball right back over.  Cal hit two free throws to push the lead to 68-64 before Mifsud drained a three with 12 seconds left that trimmed the lead to 68-67.  After Cal hit two free throws, Green rebounded a missed shot and found Hay who drained the game tying three pointer at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.
 
The Griffins opened overtime by scoring the first six points of the period.  Two from Obiefule and one from Mifsud.  Cal then ran off nine straight points to take a 79-76 lead with 1:35 to play in OT.  Kaufman then tied the game with a three point play with 1:24 left.  After a defensive stop, Obiefule gave SHU a 81-79 lead with 55 seconds left.  Cal tied the score with 35 seconds to play.  After a Cal foul, Kaufman hit one of two free throws.  SHU then forced a Cal turnover and Obiefule hit 1 of 2 free throws to give SHU an 83-81 lead.  Cal had one more shot but their three pointer at the buzzer came up short.
 
Mariah Wells led the Griffins with 16 points.  Kinross Obiefule added 15 points.  Jenna Kaufman and Lindsey Mifsud each tossed in 14 points.  Alexandra Hay added 13 points including the game tying three pointer that forced overtime. 
 
SHU will return home on Wednesday when they host Mercyhurst.
