Seton Hill hosted Cheyney University on Wednesday evening as they closed out PSAC Crossover action in the McKenna Center. The Griffins used a hot shooting second half in route to a 64-47 victory over the Lady Wolves. SHU improves to 8-7 overall and 4-5 in PSAC action.
Jharrin Gill opened the scoring for the Griffins with a basket 30 seconds into the contest. Cheyney answered with four straight points to take a 4-2 lead.
Mariah Wells then drained a three and hit a jumper to give the Griffins an 8-4 lead with 6:34 to play in the quarter. Two more baskets from Wells pushed the lead to 12-9. Cheyney hit a three to tie the score and
Kinross Obiefule's basket with 54 seconds left in the quarter gave SHU a 14-12 advantage after one quarter of play.
Over the first five minutes of the second quarter, the Wolves outscored the Griffins 10-3 to take a 22-17 advantage. Back to back three pointers from
Lindsey Mifsud and
Halie Torris put the Griffins back in front 23-22 with four minutes left in the half. Mifsud hit another jumper and
Chrisanna Green went 1-2 from the line but Cheyney took a 27-26 lead into the halftime break.
Jenna Kaufman scored the first two points of the second half to give the Griffins a lead they would not give up the rest of the contest. After Cheyney cut the lead to 30-29, the Griffins went on a quick 6-0 run on four points from Torris to take a 36-29 lead. A layin from Gill at the end of the third quarter gave the Griffins a 42-33 lead after three quarters.
The Griffins continued their hot shooting in the fourth quarter to pull away from Cheyney. Torris drilled a three to put SHU ahead by 10 points and back to back threes from
Alexandra Hay and Mifsud extended the lead to 54-39 with 3:37 left in the game. SHU contined to add to its lead and closed out crossover action with a 64-47 win.
SHU improved on its 37% shooting percentage in the first half by shooting 59% in the second half. The Griffins finished the game shooting 48% from the floor. Seton Hill also outrebounded Cheyney by a 49-32 margin. The Griffins also forced 14 turnovers and outscored Cheyney 36-28 in the paint and 33-4 off the bench.
Halie Torris led the Griffins with 14 points. She also added 5 rebounds.
Lindsey Mifsud was the other Griffin in double figures with 10 points. Mifsud also added 5 rebounds and 4 assists.
Jharrin Gill and
Mariah Wells each tossed in 9 points in the win. Wells also finished with a team high 8 rebounds.
Seton Hill returns to PSAC West action on Saturday as they travel to defending national champions California (PA). Tip is set for 3 PM.
