Seton Hill hosted Clarion on Wednesday evening in a PSAC West contest looking to advenge an earlier loss to the Golden Eagles. The Griffins built a 30-19 haltime lead and evened the season series with Clarion after a 53-46 victory. SHU improves to 11-10 overall and 7-8 in PSAC play while the Golden Eagles fall to 7-14 overall and 7-8 in PSAC play.
The Griffins took an early 4-0 lead in the contest on baskets from
Jenna Kaufman and
Jharrin Gill in the first minute of play. Clarion answered right back with six straight points to take a 6-4 lead, three minutes into the contest.
Hannah Laslo tied the score with a bucket and back to back baskets from Gill gave SHU a 10-6 lead. SHU used baskets from Kaufman, Laslo and
Alexandra Hay to take a 16-10 lead after one quarter of play.
Back to back baskets from
Kinross Obiefule and a free throw from
Chrisanna Green extended the Griffins lead to 21-12 with 7:17 left in the second quarter. Clarion battled back to trim the lead to 23-18 with 1:49 left in the half. The Griffins then outscored the Golden Eagles 7-1 the rest of the half to take a 30-19 halftime advantage.
After a three pointer from Hay and a jumper from
Mariah Wells, SHU led 41-22 with 4:47 left in the third quarter. Clarion then went on an 11-0 run to cut the lead to 41-33 with 1:34 left in the quarter. A layup from Kaufman and a three pointer from Wells pushed the Griffins lead back to 46-33 at the end of the third quarter.
Kaufman opened the scoring in the fourth quarter before Clarion scored four straight to trim the SHU lead to 48-37 with 6:35 left in the game. Green answered with a basket and Hay hit one of two from the line to push the lead back to 51-37 with 4:47 to play. Over the next two minutes, the Golden Eagles outscored the Griffins 6-0 to cut the lead to 51-43 with 2:33 to play. Gill hit two free throws down the stretch and the Griffin defense locked down holding Clarion to just one field goal the rest of the way for the 53-46 victory.
Seton Hill shot 40% from the floor while holding Clarion to just 29% from the floor. SHU hurt themselves going just 5-16 at the free throw line. Seton Hill also outrebounded the Golden Eagles by a 44-38 margin.
Jenna Kaufman and
Jharrin Gill each led the Griffins with 10 points each. Kaufman also added 6 rebounds while Gill added 3 assists.
Mariah Wells,
Alexandra Hay and
Kinross Obiefule each tossed in 8 points each. Wells finished the game with 12 rebounds while Obiefule added 7.
Seton Hill returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Pitt Johnstown for a 1 PM tip.
