Griffins Win Two at PSAC/MEC Challenge



After a rough bus trip to West Liberty on Friday morning, the Griffin volleyball team won two matches at the PSAC/MEC Challenge.  The Griffins needed five sets to defeat Fairmont State in their first matchup of the day before sweeping West Liberty in three to earn their second win of the day.  SHU improves to 8-2 on the season. 

Seton Hill pulled away late in the first set of the Fairmont State match for a 25-17 victory.  Fairmont State evened up the match with a 26-24 victory in the second set.  The Griffins jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead in the third set and took a 2-1 lead with a 25-15 win in the third.  FSU took an early 6-1 lead in the fourth set.  The Griffins battled back and led 23-22 after two FSU hitting errors before the Falcons scored the final three points of the set to tie the match at two with a 25-23 win.  SHU came out of the gates fast in the fifth and final set taking a 7-1 lead.  A kill from Cassie Hausfeld and an ace from Lauren Teed gave SHU match point and a 14-7 lead.  After FSU scored three points, Hausfeld and Shelby Kyllo teamed up for a block to end the match. 

Hausfeld led the Griffins with a match high 20 kills.  Kyllo finished with 10 kills and Emily Gilles added 8.  Kyllo finished with 9 kills while Hausfeld added 5.  Brynn Fleury had a team high 25 assists with Maggie Murray adding 23.  Teed had a match hig 30 digs.

The Griffins hit .357 in their win over West Liberty.  SHU took the first set by a 25-17 score.  The Griffins followed that with a 25-15 win in the second set.  SHU closed out the match with a 25-16 win in the third and final set.  Kyllo led SHU with 10 kills.  Hausfeld added 9 and Abigail Malsch finished with 5.  Kyllo also had 5 blocks.  Fleury had 19 assists with Murray adding 15.  Teed again had a match high in digs with 18.

SHU will continue play in the PSAC/MEC Challenge at Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday when they take on Shepherd and Wheeling Jesuit.
