Griffins Fall at Home to #8 Mercyhurst

Seton Hill hosted Mercyhurst in a battle of top 20 Division II lacrosse teams on Wednesday afternoon in a PSAC battle.  The #8 Lakers outscored the #16 Griffins 10-4 in the second half to escape with a 17-10 victory.  SHU falls to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in PSAC action.  The Lakers improve to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in PSAC action.

Mercyhurst got on the scoreboard just 17 seconds into the contest to take a 1-0 lead.  Emma Simmers tied the score at one with a goal from Renee Kania with just under 23 minutes left in the house.  After a Laker goal, SHU took a 3-2 lead on goals from Keagan Pontious and Simmers.  Kania assisted on both of the goals.  The Lakers responded with 2 goals in just over a minute to retake a 4-3 lead with 15:04 to play.  Simmers tied the score at four with a free position shot goal.  33 seconds later the Lakers scored to take a 5-4 lead.  Simmers and Pontious scored 26 seconds apart to give the Griffins their last lead of the contest at 6-5 with 8:27 left in the half.  Mercyhurst scored the final two goals of the half to take a 7-6 lead into the halftime break. 

Mercyhurst scored the first two goals of the second half to extend their lead to 9-6 just over five minutes into the second half.  Back to back unassisted goals from Pontious cut the Laker lead to 9-8 with 20:54 to play.  Over the next nine minutes, the Lakers went on a 5-0 run to take control of the contest.  Christine Palmeri ended the Laker run with a goal.  Pontious scored the final goal of the game with four seconds left.

Seton Hill held the advantage in most statistical categories.  SHU outshot the Lakers 26-24 and had more ground balls (17-12) and draw controls (15-14).  SHU turned the ball over 16 times to 13 for the Lakers.

Keagan Pontious was spectacular for the Griffins as she led the team with 5 goals.  The 5 goals are the most she's scored in her early college career.  Keagan added 10 draw controls and 5 ground balls.  Emma Simmers finished with 4 goals and an assist.  Renee Kania added 5 assists.

The Griffins will host Kutztown on Saturday afternoon at 3 PM.
