Griffins Split DH with Cal; End Vulcans 41 Game PSAC West Winning Streak

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Griffin softball team made the short trip to California, PA for a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.  California scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one for a 2-1 walkoff victory.  SHU pounded out 14 hits in game two in route to a 10-5 win.  The victory ended the Vulcans 41 game PSAC West winning streak.  SHU is now 11-5 overall and 3-3 in PSAC West play.

Game one was a pitcher's dual between the Griffins Amanda Huff and the Vulcans Alex Sagl.  Neither team had a hit the first two innings and the Vulcans got their first hit in the bottom of the third.  The Griffins scored the first run of the game in the fifth without a hit.  Kaitlyn Kutchman walked to lead off the inning and was pinch ran for by Delaney Cortazzo.  Cortazzo stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch when Huff walked.  Cortazzo then scored on a wild pitch.  The Griffins got their only hit of the game in the sixth when Victoria Stock reached on an infield single.  SHU led 1-0 until the bottom of the seventh.  A leadoff walk and an error on a bunt put runners on first and third with no one out.  The next hitter doubled off the top of the center field wall to score both runs and give the Vulcans the 2-1 walkoff victory.

Amanda Huff was the hard luck loser.  She went the distance, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 6.

The Griffins loaded the bases with one out in the first inning of game two but a strikeout and ground out ended the threat.  The Vulcans scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-0 lead.  Seton Hill scored twice in the top of the fourth.  Lauren Sauerwein singled to lead off the inning.  Paige Hertzog and Caitlin Tobin also singled to load the bases with one out.  After a foul out, Carlee Wickstrom singled up the middle to plate two runs.  Cal hit a leadoff homer in the bottom of the fourth to push the lead to 4-2.  Hertzog hit a two run homer in the fifth to tie the score at 4.  The Griffins broke the game open with 5 runs in the sixth.  With one out, Victoria Stock singled to drive in a run and two more runs scored on the play when the Vulcans made two throwing errors on the play.  Christine Henderson followed with a single and scored when Kaitlyn Kutchman homered to center field to give SHU a 9-4 lead.  Cal got one run back in the bottom of the sixth.  Henderson drove in Stock with a single in the seventh for an insurance run for the Griffins.

Christine Henderson earned the victory in game two.  She pitched 6 1/3 innings of relief, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits.  She struck out 4.  Henderson also had 3 hits at the plate in the game.  Victoria Stock, Kaitlyn Kutchman, Lauren Sauerwein, Paige Hertzog and Caitlin Tobin each had two hits.

SHU returns to action on Monday when they host Pitt Johnstown.
