Box Score The women's lacrosse team started off PSAC play with a home matchup against Gannon on Saturday afternoon. SHU jumped out to a 10-3 lead and led 14-7 before hanging on for a 14-12 victory. SHU is now 4-1 overall and 1-0 in PSAC play.
Christine Palmeri opened the scoring just 2:12 into the contest off a feed from
Emma Simmers. Gannon scored the next two goals to take a 2-1 advantage. The Griffins responded with six straight goals over a 12 minute stretch to take a 7-2 lead. Simmers scored 4 goals during the run. Palmeri scored the first goal of the run and Keagan Portious added the other goal. Gannon trimmed the lead to 7-3 at the 11 minute mark before goals from Palmeri, Simmers and Pontious extended the lead to 10-3 with 1:33 to play in the half. Gannon scored the last goal of the half and SHU led 10-4 at the halftime break.
Gannon scored the first goal of the second half 1:44 into the half. Pontious scored her third of the contest and
Emily Fagan scored less than two minutes later to give the Griffins a 12-5 lead with just under 26 minutes remaining in the half. Both teams alternated goals with Fagan and Simmers scoring to give SHU a 14-7 advantage with 15:55 to play in the second half. The Griffin offense then went cold and Gannon scored 5 goals in 10 minutes to cut the SHU lead to 14-12 with 5:15 to play. The Griffins were able to keep the Knights off the scoreboard the rest of the half to secure the 14-12 win.
Emma Simmers led the SHU attack with 6 goals and 1 assist.
Christine Palmeri and
Keagan Pontious each scored three goals with Palmeri adding an assist.
Emily Fagan added two goals.
Renee Kania finished the contest with 4 assists. Fagan also picked up an assist.
SHU continues PSAC play on Tuesday when they travel to Slippery Rock for a 7 PM start.
