SHU Improves to 2-0 with 18-6 win over Shepherd

The Griffins waited an extra day for their home contest with Shepherd but it was well worth their wait as they cruised to an 18-6 victory over the visiting Rams.  Emily Fagan and Emma Simmers continued to lead the offense in the win.  SHU improves to 2-0 early in the season.

Shepherd opened the scoring 3:32 into the game.  Renee Kania tied the score at one with a goal from Emma SimmersSavannah Monroe gave SHU a 2-1 lead with an unassisted goal 10 minutes into the contest.  The Rams then scored the next two goals to take a 3-2 lead with 18:12 left in the first half.  From that point on it was all Griffins for the rest of the half as they outscored Shepherd 6-0 the rest of the half.  Simmers tied the score with an unassisted goal with 16:06 to play.  Emily Fagan then netted her first two goals of the game, 26 seconds apart to gove SHU a 5-3 lead.  Monroe and Kania assisted on the goals.  Keagan Pontious, Simmers and Kania closed out the scoring in the half as SHU took a 8-3 haltime advantage.

Shepherd again opened the scoring in the half, cutting the SHU lead to 8-4.  SHU then scored two goals 40 seconds apart to take a 10-4 lead.  Fagan scored from Charlotte Cunningham and Pontious followed with one from Cunningham.  Fagan followed with a goal on a free position shot to increase the lead to 11-4 with just over 20 minutes remaining.  Simmers then netted her third of the game and Fagan followed with her fifth as SHU pushed their lead to 13-4.  Shepherd got a goal back before Pontious scored from Kania to make it 14-5 with 14 left to play.  The Rams answered with a goal before Monroe and Nellie Phillips scored on free position shots to increase the lead to 16-5.  Simmers scored her fourth from Christine Palmeri and Palmeri closed out the scoring with a goal with 3:50 to play.

Emily Fagan led the Griffins with 5 goals.  Emma Simmers added 4 goals and 2 assists.  Keagan Pontious finished with 3 goals.  Savannah Monroe and Renee Kania each scored twice with Kania adding 3 assists.  Meghan Hollar recorded 9 saves for the win.

The Griffins will hit the road for spring break next week, taking on the University of Tampa next Tuesday evening at 7:30 PM
