SHU Ends 2015 with Road Victory

Seton Hill closed out the 2015 part of their schedule with a road contest against former WVIAC foe Alderson Broaddus on New Year's Eve afternoon.  The Griffins used a strong fourth quarter to rally for the 70-63 victory.  SHU improves to 7-6 on the season while the Battlers fall to 1-9.

The Griffins opened the scoring when Mariah Wells drained the first shot of the game, a three pointer.  Wells hit her second three of the quarter to extend the Griffins lead to 8-4.  Wells continued her hot shooting in the opening quarter as she hit her third three of the game that put the Griffins back in the lead at 13-11 just under midway through the first quarter.  Back to back layups from Lindsey Mifsud and Chrisanna Green put SHU ahead 17-13.  Halie Torris then hit a jumper at the end of the quarter that gave the Griffins a 23-19 advantage after one period of play.

A long drought without a field goal hurt the Griffins in the second quarter as they were outscored 14-9.  Kinross Obiefule hit a basket at the 8:31 mark of the quarter that extended the lead to 25-19.  Mifsud hit a free throw but SHU went nearly seven minutes without a free throw as Alderson Broaddus took a 28-26 lead.  Jenna Kaufman's layup with 1:50 to play tied the game at 28.  AB took a 33-32 lead into the halftime break.

Wells opened the third quarter scoring with a three pointer and a layin from Jharrin Gill gave SHU a 37-33 advantage one minute into the second half.  Mifsud hit a three pointer to give SHU a 48-47 lead with 3:45 to play in the quarter.  Hannah Laslo followed with a layup to extend the lead to 50-47.  AB then ended the quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 55-50 lead after three quarters.

Obiefule scored three seconds into the fourth quarter but AB drilled a three pointer to push their lead to 58-52.  SHU then went on an 8-0 run capped by a Kaufman layup to take a 60-58 lead with 7:32 remaining in the contest.  After AB tied the score, Wells gave the Griffins the lead for good with a basket at the 6:07 mark.  Torris extended the lead to three with just under five minutes remaining.  AB trailed by two after two free throws but Mifsud drained a three pointer to extend the lead to 68-63 with 1:24 to play and the Griffin defense clamped down to secure the win.

The Griffins finished the game shooting 50% from the floor.  SHU outrebounded AB 39-25.

Mariah Wells led the Griffins with 22 points.  She also added 8 rebounds with 3 steals and 3 assists.  Linsdey Mifsud also reached double figures with 13 points.  Kinross Obiefule was the third Griffin in double figures with 10 points.

SHU returns to PSAC action on Sunday when they travel to West Chester for a PSAC crossover.
