Seton Hill closed out the pre holiday portion of their schedule with a road contest at Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon. The Griffins used a strong second half in route to a 61-58 victory. SHU improves to 6-6 overall and 3-4 in PSAC play. The Rock falls to 7-5 overall and 4-3 in PSAC play.
Lindsey Mifsud got the Griffins on the board first as she drained the first shot of the game, a three pointer. The Rock answered with two three pointers of their own to take a 6-3 lead. The Rock was able to extend that lead to 14-6 at the 3:05 mark of the first quarter before Alexandra Deep hit a three pointer to end the Rock run. Deep hit another three two minutes later but Slippery Rock took a 19-12 lead after the first period of play.
Seton Hill managed just one point in the first five minutes of the second quarter as SRU built their lead up to 27-13 midway through the second quarter. Back to back baskets from
Halie Torris and a jumper from
Jharrin Gill trimmed the lead to 27-20 with 3:26 left in the half. Torris also hit a layup late in the half that cut the Rock lead 33-24 at the half.
The Griffins scored the first five points of the third quarter to cut the Rock's advantage to 33-29 with 7:45 to play in the quarter.
Jenna Kaufman's three point play trimmed the lead to 35-32 with six minutes remaining in the quarter. A three pointer from Kaufman, a layin from Mifsud and a three pointer from Alexandria Hay gave SHU its first lead since the opening basket at 40-37 with 3:00 to play. Later Torris drained a three as the Griffins held a 45-44 advantage after three quarters of play.
The teams exchanged baskets over the first four minutes of the fourth quarteras SHU led 51-50 with 5:40 to play. Torris then hit a jumper to extend the lead to 53-50. The Rock answered with four straight points to take a 54-53 lead with 3:41 to play. On the next SHU possession,
Mariah Wells hit a layin to put the Griffins back in front. After a Rock miss, Kaufman extended the lead to 57-54. SRU scored on its next possession before
Hannah Laslo put hte Griffins back ahead by three at 59-56 with 1:55 to play. Both teams missed three pointers on their next possession before a Griffin turnover lead to a Rock basket that cut the SHU lead to 59-58 with under a minute to play. SRU then forced another Griffin turnover but the Griffin defense forced a missed shot and Gill pulled down a big rebound with 10 seconds left. Mifsud was then fouled and calmly sank two free throws to give SHU the 61-58 lead with six seconds to play. The Rock's last second three pointer missed and the Griffins left with the come from behind win.
SHU shot 52% from the floor in the second half in the win. SHU outrebounded the Rock 41-39 as well.
Halie Torris led the Griffins with 12 points.
Lindsey Mifsud and
Jenna Kaufman each added 11 points.
Jharrin Gill finished the game with 10 points.
Mariah Wells pulled down 11 rebounds in the win.
SHU will be off until December 31st when they travel to Alderson Broaddus.
