Seton Hill opened PSAC West play by hosting Pitt Johnstown on Tuesday evening in the McKenna Center. The Griffins used a 20-7 third quarter advantage in route to a 66-58 victory. SHU improves to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in PSAC play while the Lady Cats fall to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in PSAC play.
Mariah Wells answered the first basket of the game from Pitt Johnstown to tie the score at two. Her second basket of the game, gave SHU a 4-3 lead. That lead would be the Griffins only lead of the quarter. The Lady Cats then went on a 7-0 run to take a 10-4 lead with 3:40 to play in the quarter. The Lady Cats would lead at the end of the quarter by the score of 16-11.
After
Halie Torris hit a layup to open the scoring but UPJ answered with a three pointer to take a six point lead at 19-13. Back to back baskets from
Kinross Obiefule and
Jharrin Gill trimmed the lead to to at 21-19.
Hannah Laslo then tied the game at 21 with a basket and Gill gave the Griffins a 23-21 lead with 2:41 to play.
Alexandra Hay then drained a three pointer to give SHU a 26-23 lead with 1:08 to play but the Lady Cats scored the final four points of the half to take a 28-26 lead at the break.
On their first possession of the half, Wells drained a three to put SHU ahead for good at 29-28. Laslo followed with a jumper that extended the lead to three at 31-28. UPj then hit a bucket to cut the lead to one. The Griffins then went on a 15-2 run over a seven minute stretch to build their lead to 46-32 late in the third quarter. Five different Griffins hit field goals during the run. SHU used a 20-7 third quarter advantage to take a 46-35 lead into the fourth quarter.
UPJ hit the first basket of the second half to trim the lead to ten but SHU then scored the next five points to build the lead back up to 15 at 51-36 on a three pointer from
Lindsey Mifsud and two free throws from Wells. SHU would hold a double figures lead for the rest of the contest until the three second mark when the Lady Cats cut the lead to the final margin of eight. SHU would lead by as many as 18 points in the fourth quarter.
The Griffins finished shooting 41% from the floor, including a 46% in the second half. SHU held UPJ to 31% from the floor including just 3-19 from three point land. SHU won the rebound war by a 46-40 margin but lost the turnover battle 21-14.
Seton Hill used balanced scoring as four Griffins reached double figures.
Mariah Wells led the Griffins with a double double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Hannah Laslo finished with 10 points and 6 rebounds.
Jharrin Gill and
Alexandra Hay also reached double figures, each scoring 10 points.
Halie Torris finished with 5 points and 10 rebounds.
Jenna Kaufman tossed in 7 points.
Seton Hill will hit the road for PSAC crossover action this weekend. The Griffins will travel to Millersville on Friday and Shippensburg on Saturday.
