SHU Earns Senior Day Victory over Edinboro

The Griffin football team closed out the home portion of the regular season as they hosted Edinboro on Saturday afternoon at Offutt Field.  The team honored 17 seniors who played their final game on home turf on Saturday.  The day and game will be a memorable one for the senior class as they went out in style with a 44-23 victory over the Fighting Scots.  SHU improves to 3-7 overall and closes out PSAC West play with a 2-5 record.

Seton Hill won the toss and deferred their choice to the second half.  Edinboro took the opening kick and drove all the way to the SHU 34 yard line but the Griffin defense forced an incompletion on fourth down to force the turnover on downs.  The Griffins then went three and out on their first drive.  On Edinboro's second possession, the Scots drove 85 yards in just six plays, the last a 54 yard touchdown run to take a 6-0 lead.  Robert Brown blocked the extra point and the Scots led 6-0 with 6:09 to play in the first quarter.  SHU answered right back with a long 14 play touchdown drive.  Dan Pietrangelo scored from three yards out on a run pass option on a fourth and goal to tie the score at 6.  Jesser Boulnemour hit the extra point to give SHU a 7-6 lead with 2:25 to play in the quarter.  SHU held that 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Griffins were forced to punt on their first possession of the second quarter and Edinboro got great field position at the SHU 39 after a punt.  The Scots took advantage of the short field and scored on a three yard touchdown pass seven plays later to take a 13-7 lead early in the second quarter.  For the second time in the contest, the Griffins answered right back with a touchdown drive of their own.  Seton Hill drove 75 yards in just six plays to retake the lead.  Khalil Howard scored on a run from the 14 yard line to tie the game at 13 and Boulnemour hit the extra point to give SHU a 14-13 lead with 8:42 to play in the half.  Both teams were forced to punt on their next possessions.  Edinboro took their final lead of the contest at 16-14 after a 21 yard field goal with 2:25 left in the half.  Again the Griffins responded with points on their next drive.  Howard had a big run of 38 yards on the drive to set up Boulnemour's 32 yard field goal on the last play of the half that gave SHU a 17-16 halftime lead.

SHU took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove 79 yards in ten plays to increase their lead.  Pietrangelo found Ty George in the back of the end zone for a 7 yard TD pass to increase the SHU lead to 23-16 early in the second half.  The extra point was blocked.  The Griffin defense forced a turnover on the first play of their next drive as Daniel Gonzalez recovered the ball at the Boro 16 yard line.  Brandon Stout capped the short drive with a two yard touchdown run to push the SHU lead to 30-16 with 10:20 left in the third.  Tanelious Walton ended the next Edinboro possession with an interception at the SHU 3 yard line.  SHU then went 97 yards in seven plays, the last a 56 yard bomb from Pietrangelo to Ardell Brown that increased the SHU lead to 37-16 with 3:16 to play in the third quarter.

On their first possession of the fourth quarter, the Griffins had a 29 yard field goal blocked.  After a three and out, SHU took over on their 13 yard line.  Stout rushed for 21 yards on first down and Pietrangelo capped off the drive with a 50 yard touchdown pass to Larry Joshua that gave SHU the 44-16 lead.  The Scots scored the final touchdown of the game on their next possession.

Seton Hill dominated the stats in the game as well.  SHU held a 31-22 advantage in first downs and nearly had 300 more yards of total offense, finishing with 653 to just 376 for Edinboro.  The Griffins also had a 33:17-26-43 advantage in time of possession.

Dan Pietrangelo finished the game 35-48 for 399 yards and 3 touchdowns.  He also rushed for a touchdown.  Pietrangelo completed passes to 11 different receivers.  Brandon Stout led the rushing game with 72 yards and a touchdown.  KeDario Lewis added 64 yards on 7 carries.  Ardell Brown caught 9 passes for 137 yards and 1 touchdown.  Shane Leatherbury added 8 receptions for 75 yards.  Otis Williams and Nicholas Boynton each had 9 tackles to lead the defense.  Dexter Williams added 8 tackles.
