Seton Hill returned home after a rough weekend in Erie where they dropped both of their PSAC West contests. The Griffins battled California (PA) in PSAC West action in the McKenna Center on Tuesday evening. The teams split the first two sets with the Griffins taking the last two sets for a 3-1 victory. SHU improves to 14-5 overall and 5-2 in PSAC play.
With the score tied at two in the first set, the Griffins ran off six straight points to take an 8-2 lead. The teams then exchanged points before SHU ran off four of five points to take a 17-9 lead. After a Cal point, the Griffins scored five straight points topped off by two kills from
Maggie Murray to take a 22-10 lead. A kill from
Katie Wenson followed by blocks from Wenson and
Jenna Sassack and Sassack and Murray gave the Griffins a 25-11 win. California took an 8-4 lead in the second set. SHU battled back to tie the set at 11 on kills from
Emily Gilles and
Cassie Hausfeld. Cal ran off four straight to take a 16-12 lead before SHU fought back to tie the set at 19. The Griffins took a 21-20 lead on a Cal error but the Vulcans were able to tie the match at one with a 25-22 set two win.
The third set was tight early until Cal scored three straight to take a 10-7 lead. SHU tied the set at 10 with kills from Sassack and Hausfeld. A block from Murray and Sassack followed by an ace from Murray and a kill from Hausfeld gave SHU a 13-10 lead. Hausfeld gave SHU a 24-21 lead. Cal scored the next two before
Shelby Kyllo ended the set with a kill giving the Griffins a 25-23 win and a 2-1 lead in the match. The fourth set was a set full of runs by each team. The biggest run of the set was a 6-0 run from the Griffins that gave them a 17-12 lead. A kill from Kyllo and a block from Kyllo and Wenson pushed the SHU lead to 23-18. Cal scored three straight before Kyllo's kill gave SHU a match point at 24-21. Cal scored a point before Murray and Sassack ended the match with a block to give SHU a 3-1 win.
Cassie Hausfeld led the Griffins with 16 kills.
Shelby Kyllo added 11 and
Jenna Sassack finished with 9. Sassack had a match high 10 blocks.
Maggie Murray finished with a match high 41 assists.
Lauren Teed had a match high 19 digs while Murray added 13 and Hausfeld 10.
Seton Hill will return to action on Friday when they host Indiana (PA) at 7 PM.
