McClam Sets New Kick Return Record as SHU Falls to IUP

Seton Hill hosted IUP on a perfect fall Saturday afternoon at Offutt Field in a PSAC West Contest.  Jarvis McClam returned a kickoff 92 yards to set a new SHU single game record but it was the lone bright spot in the Griffins 47-10 loss to the Crimson Hawks.  SHU falls to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in PSAC West play after the loss.  IUP improves to 4-1 overall 3-0 in PSAC West play.

IUP won the coin toss and defered to the second half with SHU taking the opening kickoff.  The Griffins muffed the kick and had to start their first drive from their own 3 yard line.  SHU was able to drive 74 yards in 13 plays and took 5:17 off the clock but were forced to turn the ball over on downs at the IUP 23 yard line.  Christian Strong hit Eric Brown with a 38 yard pass on a 3rd and 13 play to get the ball to midfield and Strong connected with McClam for a 18 yard pass to move to the IUP 31 on the drive.  IUP was then able to drive 77 yards in 8 plays, setting up a 1 yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead with 6:42 left in the first quarter.  After a SHU three and out, the Griffin defense stepped up and made a stand, forcing the Crimson Hawks to turn the ball over on downs on the Griffins 34 yard line.

SHU forced an IUP punt on their first drive of the second half.  SHU took over on their own 25 yard line and used a 30 yard pass to McClam and a 20 yard pass to Shane Leatherbury to move to the IUP 17 yard line.  The Griffins then lined up for a 34 yard field goal attempt but it was blocked and returned to the SHU 32 yard line.  Eight plays later, IUP kicked a 32 yard field goal to take a 10-0 lead with 2:36 to play before the half.  The Crimson Hawks took that 10-0 lead into the halftime break.

IUP went 75 yards in 5 plays on their opening drive of the second half, ending with a 15 yard TD pass to take a 16-0 lead over the Griffins.  The Griffins were intercepted on their next possession which led to a 36 yard IUP touchdown pass that increased the Crimson Hawks lead to 23-0 with 11:12 to play in the third quarter.  McClam returned the kickoff 38 yards to the SHU 44 yard line to start their next drive.  Strong hit Brown for a 19 yard gain on the second play of the drive but the drive stalled at the IUP 33 yard line.  The Crimson Hawks scored on their second play of the drive on a 62 yard QB run for touchdown to take a 30-0 lead midway thru the third quarter.  On the kickoff, McClam took the ball at his own 8 yard line and cut across the field to the Griffins sideline and took the kick to the house for a 92 yard touchdown return.  The 92 yard return is the longest in school history.  IUP added a 39 yard field goal on their next possession and after another SHU interception, scored from three yards out to increase their lead to 40-7 late in the third quarter.

SHU had to punt on their first possession of the fourth quarter.  IUP then went 68 yards on 8 plays to score their final touchdown of the contest and led 47-7 with 10:59 left in the game.  SHU closed out the scoring with 34 yard field goal from Jesser Boulnemour with 1:19 to go in the game.

IUP held a 22-16 advantage in first downs and finished with 485 yards of total offense compared to 330 for the Griffins.  Christian Strong finished the game 16-36 for 272 yards.  Eric Brown led the Griffins with 5 receptions for 123 yards.  Jarvis McClam added 4 receptions for 67 yards.  McClam also finished with 237 yards on kick returns.  Nicholas Boynton led the defense with 11 tackles including 3 for loss and 1 sack.  Dexter Williams finished with 10 tackles.

Seton Hill returns to action next Saturday when they travel to unbeaten Clarion for a 3 PM kickoff.
