Women's Lacrosse Opens Season with 16-5 Victory

The Seton Hill women's lacrosse team returned to the field to open their 2014 season on a blustery and snowy Thursday afternoon.  The Griffins gave all the fans in attendance exactly what they were looking for as they took an 11-4 haftime lead and cruised to a 16-5 victory over visiting Notre Dame (OH) in coach Courtney Grove's return to the Griffin bench.

Emma Simmers opened the scoring just 1:59 into the first period when she scored off a feed from Alessandra Nicholas.  Notre Dame tied the score at one before Morgan Cain scored at the 21:13 mark of the first half to give SHU a 2-1 advantage.  NDC tied the score at two at the 17:51 mark but Emily Fagan scored 18 seconds later to give the Griffins the lead right back.  The Falcons again tied the score at three before the Griffins went on an 8-0 goal scoring run to take an 11-3 advantage.  Cain scored three goals and assisted on two more during the run.  Christine Palmeri and Fagan each scored twice during the 8-0 run.  NDC scored the final goal of the half as the Griffins took an 11-4 lead into the halftime break.

Seton Hill opened the second half by scoring the first four goals.  Palmeri, Rachel Hilbert, Nicholas and Simmers scored the goals for the Griffins.  After Notre Dame made it 15-5, Elizabeth Otwell ended the scoring with a goal at the 5:56 mark of the half.

Morgan Cain led the Griffin offense with 4 goals and 3 assists.  Emma Simmers and Emily Fagan each scored 3 goals and added 1 assist.  Christine Palmeri also scored 3 goals.  Renee Kania added 3 assists.  Meghan Hollar recorded 7 saves in the first half for the win.

Seton Hill will travel to Holy Family on Saturday.
